Mangalore, August 20: “30 years ago, India was considered as a nation of the beggars, slums and snake charmers. Today, it is attracting unprecedented foreign investment due to the achievements in the field of education”, said Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala.

He was delivering the key-note address at the district level educational convention and information workshop on “Proactive Administration for Quality Education” at Netravati Auditorium of Zilla Panchayat here on Saturday.

Mr Heggade noted that the biggest difference in India since independence is the creation of opportunities that has helped the people from the rural areas to grow and contribute for the development of the nation.

Commenting on the encouragement of the Government towards education, he said 'Government' is even providing meals as means to provide a balanced diet for economically backward children.

He commended the efforts by the 'Government' in promoting education. “Education is free, books are free and uniforms are free. To encourage students further they are even freed of exams till eighth standard”, he observed.

He recommended the use of Public Private Partnership to be employed in the mid-day meal scheme to make it more successful.

He also encouraged the officials to make use of the opportunities they have received to strive for the benefits of the society, even though their efforts cannot be directly observed by the general public.

G K Kumar Nayak, Secretary of State, Primary and Higher Education, Government of Karnataka said that Human Resource Development has been the primary objective of the government today.

“Today, State Government's budget on education is Rs 10,100 crores, which consists 4% of state GDP”, he noted. Due to mid-day meal scheme 99,000 women are involved in cooking in 27,000 kitchens across the state, he said.

He explained that Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and its related schemes strive to create a feeling of oneness with the school and society by encouraging involvement from parents, NGO's and voluntary organisations.

"Based on the discussions and negotiations, the cost per test has been fixed at Rs 2,250. This includes the screening test and a confirmatory test," said order by Health and Family Welfare Department's Additional Chief Secretary Jawaid Akhtar.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Monday said he would not get involved in any 'wicked act' of bringing down the B S Yediyurappa-led government in Karnataka, amid claims that 15 to 20 BJP MLAs were ready to come out.

Clarifying that he would not disturb the government, the former Chief Minister said for him, the development of the state was important. "With great difficulty, you (Yediyurappa) have become Chief Minister for the fourth time, (I am) happy, I have nowhere said that I will disturb your government. Even now some people come and ask why I'm sitting silent when 15-20 people are ready to come out of BJP and why don't I make an attempt (to poach them), Kumaraswamy said. Speaking to reporters in Hassan, he sought to know why he should get entangled in that 'sludge' and he was not in a hurry.

"I will not get involved in a wicked act of removing a responsible government like Yediyurappa did. For me the development of the state is important," he said.

Though Kumaraswamy had raised questions about the longevity of the BJP government ahead of the December 5 bypolls, he had even then given clear indications that he would not attempt to pull down the administration as it would affect the development of the state.

The ruling BJP had swept the by-elections by winning 12 of the total 15 seats, helping the Yediyurappa government retain the majority in the Assembly.

With BJP winning 12 of the 15 assembly constituencies, it's numbers went up from 105 (including an independent) to 117, which is well ahead of the halfway mark of 111 in a 223-member Assembly (two seats-- Maski and R R Nagar-- are vacant due to pending litigation in the High Court).

The BJP came to power after the Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) coalition government collapsed as 17 MLAs had rebelled against the alliance leadership and resigned as legislators, to later favour the saffron party.
