Janmashtami celebrated with traditional fervor in Temple city

Udupi, August 21: It was feast to the eyes as the temple city of Udupi celebrated Krishna Janmashtami with a blend of devotion, art and culture.

Special offerings of Tulasi and Parijath flowers were made to lord Krishna, decorated as `Balakrishna', in a golden cradle, under the leadership of Paryaya Shiroor Mutt pontiff Sri Laxmivara Theertha Swamiji. Nonstop bhajans by different troups marked the day.

Glimpses of `huli vesha' (tiger dance), music bands, dance troups going round the city and performing in front of business outlets for a lucrative sum attracted the gathering.

Social and Cultural organisations across the city had organised painting, rangoli, singing, muddu Krishna competitions.

Artists Harish Saga had sculpted the sand sculptures of Kaalinga Mardana Krishna at Malpe beach on the eve of Srikrishnastami.

'Krishnarghya', offering holy water in a conch in front of lord Krishna, at the Theertha Mantapa performed by Sri LAxmivara Theertha Swamiji at 11.40 pm sharp and

`Chandrarghya', offering milk to the moon at 11.47 pm (midnight) were also held.

Theists from brahmin community observed wholeday fasting, before chanting `Vishnu Sahasra Namavali' and offering `argya' to lord Krishna in the midnight.

Lakhs of floating population is expected to witness Srikrishna Leelothsava or Vitlapindi, on Sunday.

Performance by renowned drummer Shivamani on Monday evening at the Srikrishna Temple vehicle parking area will be the special attraction.

Kalaburagi, Mar 16: A family member of the 76-year-old man from Kalaburgai who died of COVID-19 on March 10 has been tested positive for the virus.

Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner B Sharat said, "One member of the family of the 76-year-old man from Kalaburgai, who died due to coronavirus has tested positive for the virus."

The disease which originated in China's Wuhan city in December last year has so far spread to more than 100 countries, infecting over 1,30,000 people.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared coronavirus a pandemic.

Riyadh, July 6: The government of Saudi Arabia has announced health protocols to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus in the 2020 Hajj season, banning gatherings and meetings between pilgrims.

Saudi Arabia decided in June to limit the number of domestic pilgrims attending the Hajj to around 1,000 to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, after barring pilgrims abroad from the rite for the first year in modern times.

Touching the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, will be banned during the Hajj this year, and a social distancing space of a meter and a half between each pilgrim during the rituals including mass prayers and while in the Kaaba circling area will be imposed, a statement by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) elaborated.

Also, access to holy Hajj sites at Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat will be limited to those with Hajj permits starting Sunday July 19 till Aug. 2 2020, and wearing masks all the time will be mandatory for both pilgrims and organisers.

Udupi/Mangaluru, Apr 3: As many as 11 liquor addicts in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have committed suicide, due to non-availability of liquor.

It is said that the District administration, in association with Psychiatrists, have taken the initiative to provide counselling services, along with telemedicine, to the addicts.

Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh said on Thursday that arrangements will be made to provide treatments and personal counselling for the liquor addicts.
