Students to get scholarships worth Rs 1 cr

Mangalore, August 25: Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund, established by World Konkani Centre, Mangalore, will award scholarships worth Rs 1 crore to over 300 Engineering and MBBS students from economically backward families of Konkani communities in an Award Ceremony to be held on August 26 at T V Raman Pai Convention Centre, Kodialbail, Mangalore.

Scholarships amounting Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000 will be awarded for the Engineering and MBBS aspirants respectively. Scholarships will be distributed by Manipal Universal Learning Chairman T V Mohandas Pai. Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation Chairman Emeritus R V Deshapande will be the chief guest while Chairman Dr P?Dayananda Pai will preside over the function. Managing Director of Ryan International Group Grace Pinto and Industrialist M Jagannath Shenoi, Mysore, will be the guests. 'Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund' envisages grant of educational scholarship to economically backward students having Konkani language as their mother tongue. Instituted in the year 2010, it was envisioned by T V Mohandas Pai.

In view of widening the scope to the scholarship fund and to include preliminary and qualifying courses to the existing set up, Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund has designed a new scheme to support educational quest of PUC Students. In a major attempt to empower economically backward Konkani Speaking Communities like, Kudubi, Kharvi, Siddi etc, the VKSSF is planning to initiate a new scholarship scheme for the high school-level students from these communities. These two schemes will be announced in the award ceremony.

Udupi, Mar 25: A 34-year-old man who returned from Dubai tested positive for novel coronavirus in Udupi district. This is the first case in the district. 

He returned from Dubai on March 18 and got admitted to a government hospital in Udupi on March 23 for fever. The swab samples were sent to Shivamogga laboratory for testing.

The report which arrived on Wednesday confirmed that he was positive for COVID-19, said DHO Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: With 26 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in the past 24 hours, the total number of positive cases in Karnataka reached 500 on Saturday.

This includes 158 patients who have been cured and discharged following treatment while 18 deaths have been reported so far due to the infection in the State, according to a media bulletin issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday evening.

A total of 324 COVID-19 cases are currently active in the State as of Saturday evening 5 pm.
According to the bulletin, Bengaluru Urban with 133 positive cases, including 49 discharged and four deaths, is the worst-affected district in the State, followed by Mysuru and Belagavi, with 89 and 54 confirmed cases, respectively.

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday held a meeting with opposition parties at his office here over COVID-19 situation in the state.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Congress leaders SR Patil and DK Shivakumar participated in the meeting. From Janata Dal (Secular), former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and HD Revanna were present.

"Congress legislative party leader Siddaramaiah and DK Shivkumar have arranged the Chief Minister to request the central government to announce a special package of Rs 50,000 crore to Karnataka to fight coronavirus and also special packages requested for small and medium scale industries," said Siddaramaiah's media secretary.

Meanwhile, Yediyurappa has announced a special package for those involved in leather works, especially those who work on the roadside.

The special package has been announced for cobblers and leather workers, who work on the roadside.
