High Court stays Rs. 75 lakh payout to Mangalore crash victims' kin

Thiruvananthapuram, August 25: In a setback for families of victims of last year's Mangalore air crash, a division bench of the Kerala High Court today overruled a single judge bench order asking air India to pay Rs. 75 lakh as minimum compensation to families of victims.

Last month, the single judge bench had ruled that Air India is liable to pay 'no fault liability' of Rs. 75 lakh to each of the victims as laid down in the Montreal convention to which India is a signatory.

One hundred fifty eight people had died in the air crash on May 22 last year.

Overruling the single judge bench order, the court held that Air India is not liable to pay 'no fault liability' and has asked the airline and the crash victims to negotiate and reach a settlement regarding the compensation.

Interestingly, Air India had gone for appeal despite initial assurances from the Civil Aviation Minister that the airline would not do so.

Counsel for victims say they will go for appeal at a higher court.

An Air India Express Boeing 737-800 airliner from Dubai carrying 166 people crashed outside Bajpe Airport in Mangalore on May 22, 2010 and burst into flames after overshooting a table-top runway and plunging into forest below.

Air India Express is the budget arm of the loss-ridden state-run carrier Air India, which has been fending off growing competition from private airlines.

Dropping Tipu Sultan from Class 7 textbook is a communally motivated move: SDPI

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed.

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Noam Chomsky, Amartya Sen among others to join 'Kerala Dialogue’

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 25: The government of Kerala under the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is all set to launch the 'Kerala Dialogue' -- a debate series on new concepts and development models during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A series of visionaries including noted political thinker Noam Chomsky and Nobel-laureate economist Amartya Sen will join this unique initiative that is to be rolled out from Friday.

The debate series to be inaugurated by the CM will feature prominent personalities from various walks of life including scientists, philosophers, diplomats, economists, writers, journalists, activists, technocrats and people's representatives.

The first episode will have Chomsky, Sen and WHO Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan speaking on 'Kerala - Future Paths of Development'.

State Planning Board vice chairman VK Ramachandran and senior journalist N Ram would be the moderators. The first episode would be telecast through the Chief Minister's official social media accounts.

The coming episodes in the series will also be telecast in the same manner. The government is of the view that the Kerala Dialogue series can ensure debates and dialogues on sustainable and inclusive development on the lines of the Kerala model.

Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput commits suicide at Mumbai home

Mumbai, Jun 14: Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide on Sunday, leaving all his fans and the industry in shock. While the reason behind him taking up the extreme step is still not clear, a look into Sushant’s social media feed suggests that things were not well for him for quite some time.

Sushant had been inactive on Twitter since months. His last tweet was on December 27, 2019. Since then, he did not even reply to any one on Twitter. Same is the case with his Facebook account as the last post on his timeline was on the same date. Interestingly, Sushant's Twitter cover picture is the popular painting - 'Starry Night', by Van Gogh, who had also reportedly committed suicide in 1890.

On Instagram, the young actor had last posted on June 3. It was a collage picture of him and his mother along with a cryptic caption that read, “Blurred past evaporating from teardrops Unending dreams carving an arc of smile And a fleeting life, negotiating between the two...#माँ”.

Was Sushant’s inactivity on Twitter, Facebook and his last cryptic post on Instagram a signal that the actor was having a tough time? Well, may be it will remain a mystery forever.
