Thousands pay respect to 19th century saint's relic

Udupi, August 25: Thousands of devotees comprising all sections of people of the Christian society on Thursday pay their respects to the relics of 19th Century Italian priest and educator St. John Bosco, popularly known as Don Bosco, at the Our Lady of Health Church at Shirva near here.

The worldwide pilgrimage of the relic began in Italy on April 25, 2009, to mark the 150th anniversary of a religious order founded by him, namely, the Society of St Francis De Sales, popularly called the Salesians of Don Bosco.

At around 8.15 a.m., students from various Christian institutions accorded a rousing welcome to the relics of St. John Bosco in a motorcycle rally from Bantakal to Shirva. The vehicle was received by the Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D'Souza at the Our Lady of Health Church at Shirva at 9 a.m.

Most Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D'Souza presided over the solemn Eucharistic celebration for youth at the church at 11 a.m.

The relic arrived in Shirva from Goa via Sirsi in Uttara Kannada. It will travel to Bangalore via Hassan.

The relic arrived in India in April 2011 at Dimapur in North East India. It is being taken through the major cities and centres of the 10 provinces in India where Salesians of Don Bosco have their centres.

As per the schedule, the relic would complete its India journey on November 30, 2011 and leave for Sri Lanka. The relic will tour about 129 countries of the world before concluding its seven year journey in 2015 to celebrate the bicentenary of his birth.

The relic comprising the bones and tissues of Don Bosco's right hand have been placed within a wax replica of Don Bosco's body, which in turn is enclosed in a large urn. The sculptured face of the statue is made with Don Bosco's own death mask – the mould made on his face right after his death and designed by Architect Gianpero Zoncu.

26 centres in Karnataka

Interestingly, there are nearly 400 Don Bosco centres in 10 provinces in India and 26 centres in Karnataka including six in Konkan province spread in three dioceses - Mangalore diocese (Shirva, Thrasi near Kundapur and Bola near Karkal), Karwar diocese (Sirsi) and Belgaum diocese (Belgaum town and Hubli).

The Salesians have also adopted a village at Pavoor near Manjeshwar in Kasargod and are working for the upliftment of the primitive tribe (the only church where mass is offered in Tulu).

Youth thrashed, arrested, hospitalised after he attacks policemen at Melkar

Mangaluru, July 10: Five people including four policemen suffered injuries following a clash at Melkar in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district last night.

Abdul Salam, 29, a resident of Goltamajalu near Kalladka, was arrested on charge of attacking policemen. He was also attacked by the cops on the spot. Currently he is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to sources, Abdul Salam and another person were quarrelling with lorry drivers on the highway. A couple of policemen including ASI Shailesh, who were on patrol, intervened.

This led to a clash between cops and Abdul Salam, who reportedly snatched the baton from a cop and hit the men in khaki, eye witnesses said.

However, police sources claimed that Abdul Salam was holding an iron road and he thrashed policemen with the rod.

Meanwhile, more policemen reached the spot and thrashed the accused before arresting him.

Police sources said ASI Shailesh, HC Devappa and PCs Niranjan and Malik were injured in the incident. The policemen were treated the government hospital in Bantwal.

Abdul Salam, who suffered critical injuries, was taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru after preliminary treatment.

A case was registered against him in the Bantwal Town Police Station under section 353, 504, 506, 332, 307, 427 IPC, and 2 A Karnataka Prevention of Destruction of Public Property Act.

Mangaluru: Saffron ‘activist’ held for death threat against Sindhu B Rupesh

Mangaluru, July 29: The police have managed to nab a youth in connection with issuing death threat against IAS officer Sindhu B Rupesh, the outgoing deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada.

The arrested has been identified as Ranjit, a resident of Bajpe, on the outskirts of the city. He is said to be Hindutva activist.

The death threat came in the wake of the officer’s warning against attack on cattle traders by anti-social elements ahead of Eid al-Adha.

Even though the IAS officer had not lodged any complaint, Moodbidri police had registered a suo motu case after a WhatsApp screenshot of the death threat went viral on social media.

Meanwhile, Sindhu B Rupesh was transferred and posted as director, electronic delivery citizen services (EDCS), DP & AR (e governance) Bengaluru.

Mangalurean Dr Soofi Anwar achieves professional recognition of Senior Fellow of HEA, UK

Dr Soofi Anwar, Director Academics of University of Stirling RAK, UAE Campus, has achieved the prestigious professional recognition of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) UK. He has achieved this milestone through the Stirling Framework for Evidencing Learning and Teaching Enhancement (SFELTE), the Continuing Professional Development Framework (CPD) for learning and teaching at University of Stirling, Scotland, UK.

He was recognized for this achievement on recently concluded virtual Learning & Teaching Conference-2020 organized by University of Stirling Campus in UK. He has secured his Ph.D. in Management from University of Azteca, Mexico.

Dr. Soofi Anwar has over 20 years of experience in teaching and academic leadership at higher education level and has worked in leading universities in UAE, Bahrain and India. He was conferred the prestigious Middle East Education Leadership Award, as the Best Professor in Management-2018 in recognition of his academic excellence, exemplary leadership in higher education. Prior to his current role, he has worked on leadership position in Birla Institute of Technology Offshore Campus RAK.

He has completed his MBA from Dept. of Business Administration, Mangalore University in 1999 and his B. Com degree from Canara College Mangaluru.

He has published numerous research papers in management and in the area of teaching and learning in higher education in reputed academic journals and international conferences proceedings. He is a member of editorial board of two leading management journals and engaged in reviewing faculty research publications in the area of management and marketing.

He is a son of Haji Abdul Khadar Kodijal and Mrs. Mariyamma from Konaje, Mangaluru.
