Hostage's family waiting, praying

Kasargod, August 28: Prayers, hope and words of comfort pour in to the family of Muhammad Nangi (53), who is among about 21 members of the crew held hostage by Somali pirates near the Salalah coast off southern Sultanate of Oman on Saturday, August 20.

A resident of Doddanangi, Mogral, near Kumble Mohammed was working for a by Mumbai-based Anglo-Eastern Ship Management.

The Somali pirates had boarded the ship, 'Firechem Bogey', and hijacked while anchored in Salalah port in Oman. A Salalah-based shipping source said the vessel was being loaded with methanol when it was seized.

Mohammed contacted his family over phone last Monday afternoon and informed about his being held captive. He also informed that it might take at least two months for the release and all the members in the ship are safe.

Though, the Eid is round the corner, his wife Zuhra, children and relatives are depressed for not hearing his words for several days.

Ray of hope
Though Muhammad Nangi's son Muneer is working in the same shipping company, fortunately he did not go in the same ship with his father. Muneer contacted the officials of his company at Mumbai and negotiated the further course of action for his father's immediate release. The family is hoping the release of Mr Nangi prior to Eid.

The other Keralite held hostage has been identified as K Rohit (26) from Thalikkulam in Thrissur. Rohit has been working on the ship as an electrician for two years.

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Bengaluru, Apr 2: In a bid to discourage people from coming out on roads during the lockdown, Bengaluru Traffic Police have inscribed a message that reads, "If you come to road, I'll come to your home."

It was written on the road at Nagenahalli check-post. The message was written by the cops in the regional language.

Meanwhile, nine fresh cases were reported in Karnataka with the count rising to 110 in the state on Wednesday.

Out of the total cases, three persons died due to the virus while nine others have been discharged after recovery.

"COVID-19 cases climb to 110 in Karnataka, with nine fresh cases being reported between 5 pm yesterday and 2 pm today. Out of the total cases, three have died while nine others have been discharged," a bulletin issued by the state health department said.

"Out of 110 cases detected and confirmed in Karnataka so far, seven cases are transit
passengers of Kerala who have landed in our airports and being treated in
Karnataka," it added.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday said that there are 1,834 coronavirus positive cases in India, including 1,649 active cases, 144 cured/discharged/migrated people and 41 deaths.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: With concerns growing by the day, the Karnataka government is readying three more labs to test throat swab samples.

Currently, only two labs in Bengaluru — National Institute of Virology and Virus Research and Diagnostics Laboratory (VRDL) lab attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute — are categorised biosafety level 2+, a requirement for coronavirus tests.

Now, the government is working on upgrading three more labs, one each in the government medical colleges at Hassan, Mysuru and Shivamogga. “The labs will be ready within one week,” the authorities said.

Currently, the labs are testing only throat swab samples of suspected patients and taking 24 hours to give the results. “A patient’s blood sample will be collected only if he or she tests positive for covid-19 infection in the first throat swab sample.

While earlier the state would send all samples of suspected coronavirus cases to NIV, Pune, the two labs were upgraded to biosafety level 2+ in mid-February.
