Mangalore, August 31: Murders of two taxi drivers in the space of a month, has come as rude shock to a community that toils to earn a livelihood. Lure of making an extra buck from acquaintances and sometimes total strangers who come to hire taxi ostensibly to go to longer destinations at odd hours is proving to be a fatal option for taxi drivers, a fact that Hussain, resident of Kabettu and Govardhan, resident of Urwa did not live to tell. They may not be the last.

K Monappa Bhandary, president of D K Zilla Taximen Mathu Maxicab Association was livid that members were ignoring instructions that are being given repeatedly at each association meeting. "Fatal consequences of this callousness are there for all to see," he told TOI when queried about Hussain and Govardhan. "Members have been often told not to take strangers on taxi trips without informing the park 'pramukh' from where they operate," he said.

Even if they are faced with the inevitable eventuality of undertaking a trip, Bhandary said, the members have been instructed to take the contact details of persons they propose to take, inform other drivers in the park from where they operate, as well as their family members before setting out. Apparently, members are throwing caution to wind and these deaths are needless to state the least, he says. "We will reiterate this to our members again," he said.

City Police Chief Seemanth Kumar Singh said the city police would come out with guidelines to prevent recurrence of such incidents. "We have a strategy in mind," he said without going in to the details, adding, "I will discuss it with my officers and implement it." Observing that the police would require cooperation from associations of taximen, Seemanth said proposed steps could include a system of booking a taxi after verifying antecedents of the person.

While Hussain was murdered and body thrown in to swollen Thunga from a bridge near Thirthahalli, body of Goverdhan was found in a bush near Belman. While police nabbed Hussain's assailants, efforts are on to nab Goverdhan's killers. Common guidelines for taxi men and those transporting BPO/IT employees is something we are considering, Seemanth says. "We will cooperate with police in preventing such incidents," Monappa adds.

Bengaluru, June 23: Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar has urged his party colleagues to be active on social media to counter the propaganda of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to media persons, the KPCC president said that no more than 20 out of the 68 Congress MLAs are active on social media.

“All those MLAs who are doing well need to be projected. We want leaders, not mere followers. They all should be the face of Congress in Karnataka. Party should not depend on just my face or Siddaramaiah’s,” he said.

Shivakumar’s diktat has resulted in the party’s social media unit scrambling to get leaders to create their accounts.

“We’re pressuring all the party MLAs and leaders. We’re asking their personal assistants or gunmen to operate their accounts if they are not savvy with social media,” KPCC social media chief A N Nataraj Gowda said.

He pointed out that the 20 MLAs who are active on social media include U T Khader, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Priyank Kharge, Krishna Byre Gowda among others.

“We’re also trying to get the accounts verified of those who are beginning to get active. For example, it was only recently that we got the accounts of S R Patil and Vijay Singh verified,” Gowda said.

Tapping the full potential of social media is crucial for the Congress because the BJP has found much success in reaching out to voters through various online platforms.

In fact, ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections, the Congress found that there were 10 ministers and some 40 MLAs who had turned a blind eye towards social media.

Shivakumar said he was also working on putting in place a system in the party under which all developments related to the state and country will be communicated to all party leaders at 10 am every day.

Bengaluru, May 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa requested his Maharashtra counterpart Uddhav Thackeray to release six TMC water from his state's reservoirs to rivers in Karnataka to meet acute drinking water shortage in North Karnataka.

Yediyurappa pointed out that the North Karnataka districts, namely Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, Yadagiri and Raichur are facing acute shortage of drinking water due to onset of summer during early days of March this year.

"I request you to kindly direct the concerned authorities to release 3 TMC of water from Warna/Koyna reservoirs to Krishna river and 3 TMC of water from Ujjaini reservoir to Bhima river on humanitarian grounds for drinking purpose," Yediyurappa said in his letter.

He reminded Thackeray that even in the past the Maharashtra government had released water from its reservoirs to meet the drinking water needs of both human beings and livestock in drought-affected areas of Karnataka.
