Mangalore, August 31: Amnesty International (AI) is putting its effort to make India sign the pact of moratorium on executions with a view to abolish death penalty.

AI secretary general Salil Shetty said that 135 nations in the world have already established moratorium on execution. "AI opposes death penalty worldwide because it violates the right to life and other human rights. We will build pressure on India to sign moratorium pact on execution," he said acknowledging the felicitation extended to him by Salil Shetty Felicitation Committee here on Tuesday.

AI, which has three million members campaigning for human rights in over 150 countries, aims to work together with full spectrum of people's organisations in India in new, innovative ways to effect real changes, Salil said.

"We are working towards the release of hundreds of prisoners in India, including social activist Binayak Sen, who are being put behind bars without fair trial. We also will launch battle against torture in police stations. We do not have right code of conduct for police in India," he lamented.

India is a democratic nation, but that does not mean that our nation is free from issues related human rights. China too monitors human rights violation, even though it is not a democratic nation,'' he said.

Love for Tulu

Salil, who is a Mangalorean, did not forget his mother tongue even after becoming the secretary general of AI. In the beginning of his speech, he said, "organising committeegu solmelu panduth shuru malpuve (I shall start my speech after thanking organisers).

Throughout his speech, he recalled his childhood and boyhood days of eating 'golibaje' and learning agriculture and culture. He expressed his desire to watch Tulu movie of Vijayakumar Kodiyalbail "Oiryardori Asal".

"This land has produced several famous persons from underworld to Miss World. I would like to call Aishwarya Rai my sister, but looking at my face people may not believe it," Salil said in mirth.

Bengaluru, April 2: At least three people have been arrested by police in connection with the attack on ASHA worker Krishnaveni in Bengaluru's Byatarayanapura area.

Earlier in the day, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said that an investigation was initiated into the incident in which ASHA workers were attacked.

"I have appointed Pulikeshi Nagar ACP, Tabarak Fathima, to investigate the matter. A case will be registered and action will be taken. ASHA workers will be protected by the police to carry out their functions," Rao told ANI here.

Earlier, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan visited one of the ASHA workers who was allegedly attacked by unidentified miscreants and termed the incident as "completely demoralising" for the workers.

ASHA workers, who were deployed to spread awareness about coronavirus and identify suspected cases, were allegedly attacked by a group of locals in Byatarayanapura here on Wednesday.

The workers said that the locals did not allow them to work and around 100 people gathered at the spot and harassed them.

This comes as the country is under a 21-day lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Bengaluru, Jan 5: BJP leader and Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa once again blamed the Congress of creating 'confusion' among the Muslim community over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act-2019 while launching a door to door campaign to dispel such rumors.

Yediyurappa was on a door-to-door campaign to make people aware of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and to allay their fears.

"Unnecessarily, the members of Congress are creating confusion among the Muslim community. I assure you that not a single Muslim will be affected because of CAA," said B. S. Yediyurappa.

"Almost all previous Prime Ministers have supported it, now Congress is creating a problem so as to create confusion among Muslims. That's why we are out on the door-to-door campaign," he said.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Hubli, Feb 25: A Hubli court in Karnataka has sent to police custody till February 28 three students from Jammu and Kashmir, who were booked under sedition charges for raising pro-Pakistan slogan in a video shared on social media.

A second Joint Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court on Monday sent the three students, identified as Basit Ashik Sophi (19), Talib Majid (19) and Amir Mohiuddin (23), to police custody till February 28 for questioning in the matter.

The court directed the police to make the accused undergo a medical evaluation before the interrogation and produce the medical certificates in the court before the next hearing.

The three students were last week transferred to Belgaum Hindalga jail from Hubli sub-jail and the case, registered in Gokul Road police station, was also transferred to the rural police station because the video was recorded in the college hostel room which is in the latter's jurisdiction.

The Kashmiri students were under judicial custody since February 17 following their arrest for raising pro-Pakistan slogans and posting a video of the same on social media on the night of February 16.
