It's Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees welcome elephant-headed-god

Mangalore, September 1: The sounds of the first “Aarti” and “Pratishthapan Puja” welcoming the elephant-headed Ganesh resounded through this coastal city on Thursday as the week-long Ganpati festival began amid tight security.

Gigantic, medium and small idols of Lord Ganesh were installed in different public venues, housing complexes and individual homes.

Thousands of Mangaloreans - ranging from slum-dwellers to millionaires - remained awake throughout Wednesday night, making last minute preparations for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Since last week, thousands of idols have arrived from artisans' studios. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in all parts of coastal Karnataka.

Various registered associations, apart from the private housing complexes, have been celebrating one of the popular festivals of the country in different styles.

A few gigantic idols were installed last week in different marquees before being unveiled Thursday. Small idols started arriving Wednesday evening.

Some associations have thematic presentations in the background of the idols.

Sri Siddi Vinayaka Prathishtana and Sarvajanika Sri Ganeshotsava Samithi organised a colourful 'Thene habba' (harvest festival) at Bunts Hostel to mark the beginning of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Karwar, Aug 6: In a shocking incident, a 40-day-old girl child was murdered by her own parents in Sirsi town in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district.

The accused are Priyanka (21) and her husband Chandrashekhar Bhat (42), residents of Ramanakoppa in Sahasrahalli in Yellapur.

According to police, the couple did not want a girl child and hence threw it into a well. The couple was arrested by the police the very next day.

The incident came to light after the child’s maternal uncle, Abhishek Jagadeesh Singh Choudhari, a resident of Rajeev Nagar in Sirsi, lodge a complaint with Yellapur police station. 

He had claimed that his sister Priyanka’s baby had been kidnapped and subsequently killed. 

Priyanka had claimed that she woke up around 2.30am on August 2 to find that her baby, Tanushri, was not in her cradle. Her husband’s family subsequently started searching for the baby, which they found dead inside a well. 

Choudhari suspected that Tanushri had been kidnapped, and had been killed by her abductors to erase any evidence of their crime.

Uttara Kannada superintendent of police Shivaprakash Devaraju constituted a team to crack the crime, and the cops, who subjected the parents to an interrogation, found that they were the culprits.

Mangaluru, May 17: With the detection of two more covid-19 positive cases in Mangaluru, the total number of cases in Dakshina Kannada today mounted to 52.

A 35-year-old woman who was under quarantine along with her husband after returning from Maharashtra today tested positive for the coronavirus. 

A 31-year-old man also tested positive for covid-19.  More details to follow.

Tumakuru, Jun 30: As many as 43 sheep were quarantined after a shepherd tested positive for novel coronavirus at Godekere Gollarahatti in Tumakuru district. 

J C Madhuswamy, district in-charge minister, has instructed the district administration and the Animal Husbandry department to subject the sheep to Covid-19 tests.

The move followed after five sheep found dead in mysterious circumstances at the village. All 43 sheep of the infected person have been isolated from the herd and kept at a place in Jakkanahalli.

"There is no evidence that the sheep can contract Covid-19 and transmit the virus to the people. But since the virus has many strains and keep changing its genetic make-up, draw throat swab samples of the sheep and send the same to Covid-19 lab. Till the report comes, keep the livestock in isolation," Madhuswamy told the officials.
