Student killed, six hurt in mishap

Uppinagady, September 3: A first year PU student was killed and five others sustained serious injuries when a jeep and a motor bike collided at Ennethodi near Alankaru on Uppinangady-Kadaka State Highway on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Lakshmi (17), daughter of Rajan from Kombaru Tamil Colony. She was studying at Durgamba PU College, Kadaba.

The injured are Pavithra (16), Deeksha (16), Ashwitha (16) and motor bike rider Wilson.

The accident occurred when the students were returning in a jeep after taking part in the immersion of Ganesh idol procession.

It is said that the motorbike rider lost his control after overtaking a speedy bus and rammed against oncoming jeep. The jeep driver too lost control over his vehicle and it overturned.

Karnataka govt proposes withdrawal of 46 cases against Sangh Parivar leaders; ‘No’, says top cop

Bengaluru, May 19: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-led Karnataka government has recommended the withdrawal of 46 cases against leaders belonging to Sangh Parivar who had apparently involved in violence during the birth anniversary celebration of Tipu Sultan in the state.

These cases – ranging from very serious forms of assaults on Muslims to unlawful assembly – were registered across Karnataka between 2014 and 2018.

Among the cases recommended to be withdrawn include those registered against senior state BJP leader Sanjay Patil, VHP leader Swaroop Kalkundri, and several district level Bajrang Dal activists.

The government recommended withdrawal of these cases under Section 321 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on March 5.

The recommendations, however, have been opposed by three crucial law enforcement departments – Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP), Director-Department of prosecution and Government litigation and Law department.

While the DG & IGP has opined that these cases “cannot be withdrawn”, both the department of prosecution and law have observed that these are “not a fit case to withdraw”.

Women lead massive protest demanding liquor ban in Karnataka

Bagalkote, Jan 27: The bank of Krishna River in front of Sangamantha Temple at Koodalasangama in Karnataka today witnessed the launch of women’s indefinite strike demanding liquor ban in the state.

Thousands of women from various parts of Karnataka have taken part in the strike being organised under the banner of 'Karnataka Madya Nisheda Andolana'.

The strike was launched to draw the attention of the state government to press for a complete ban on the sale of liquor across the state.

About 50 various organizations and religious pontiffs have extended their support for the strike. Food is being cooked on the bank of the river for the agitating women.

The women from Chikmagalur, Tumakuru, Raichur and Ballari districts are taking part in it.

Section 144 near Karnataka Vidhana Soudha from March 2 ahead of Budget session

Bengaluru, Feb 28: Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Friday said that Section 144 will be imposed near Vidhana Soudha for Budget session starting from March 2.

"Section 144 of the CrPC (prohibits assembly of more than 4 people in an area) will be imposed in the area around Vidhana Soudha from March 2 to March 31 ahead of the Budget session,"Bhaskar Rao said.

The police said that they have intelligence inputs of protests near Vidhana Soudha.
