RTO sets Sep 30 deadline to legalise registration for vehicle owners in city

Mangalore, September 3: Issuing a strict warning to those who misuse inter-state vehicle registration facility, Regional Transport Officer C Mallikarjuna said that vehicles registered in other states and plying in city without paying the Life Time Tax will have to pay hefty fines, if their owners failed to pay due taxes to the state government before September 30.

Addressing media persons here on Saturday Mr Mallikarjuna said that many people from the city, with an intention to evade tax payable to the state government, have got their vehicles registered in other states, especially in Pondicherry and Kerala, where taxes are much lower compared to Karnataka.

Stating that it is illegal to ply such vehicles on the roads here without paying the Life Time Tax, he said that the State government has been losing a large amount of revenue due to this illegal practice.

Mr Mallikarjuna said that although this trend is seen in other cities of the state too, it has become a matter of serious concern in Mangalore, as it is nearer to Pondicherry.

He said those who have got their vehicles registered from other states, must approach RTO immediately to officially re-register their vehicles in Mangalore after paying tax.

He said that RTO would check the genuineness of the existing registration documents, before registering it here.

He also clarified that the local RTO would refund the collected tax to the vehicle owner, when he applies for no objection certificate once he gets transferred to any other state.

No driving license to Keralites

In order to stop the misuse of the driving licenses issued from here, he said, the RTO has stopped issuing driving licenses to residents of Kerala.

“Recently a few people from Manjeshwar and Kasaragod had applied for driving licence here. But, we asked them to approach the RTO which has jurisdiction over the place they come from,” he said.

However, he clarified that the RTO would accept applications if there were 100% sure about the genuineness of the applicant.

Bengaluru, Mar 2: Killing an Indian porcupine and inviting his TikTok followers to view it proved costly for a 25-year-old man from Kalaburagi. Forest department officials tracked him down and arrested him on Sunday morning.

Manjunath Biryalhissa, a resident of Jewargi taluk, was famous for his various TikTok videos and for lifting heavy stones in his village and neighbouring areas.

According to forest officials, on Friday, Manjunath and his friends caught a porcupine in Sindagi range, Vijayapura and stoned it to death. Later, they fried and cooked it. Manjunath then made an 18-second video, where he spoke about the porcupine hunt and slaughter, besides inviting his followers to like the video and join him in the feast.

The video was on TikTok and Facebook. Wildlife activists who found the video alerted forest department officials.

“Porcupine comes under schedule four of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Keeping this video as evidence we were able to trace him through his Facebook account, where he had shared details of his hometown,” said forest officials.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: The Karnataka government on Wednesday put on hold a controversial proposal to drop certain chapters, including on Islam, Christianity, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali, from social science textbooks to reduce the 2020-21 syllabi for students in classes 1-10.

Citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption caused to the academic calendar of the year, the government had earlier dropped the chapter on Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali from the Class 7 social science textbook, saying chapters on Tipu Sultan have been retained in the Class 6 and 10 textbooks.

The move did not go down well with the opposition, which saw certain ulterior motives behind the decision.

Apparently under sharp criticism, the Department of Public Instruction issued a new notification on Wednesday "on the directions of the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar".

There is a delay in opening the schools during the academic year 2020-21 due to COVID-19 pandemic, said the latest order.

In this context, the order said, chapters were dropped to fit in 120 days of the academic year for classes 1 to 10 and the same was published in the department's website.

"However, on the directions of the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, the decision to drop certain chapters has been put on hold. A review will be done following which the deleted chapters will be uploaded in the website," the order read.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kumar had issued a statement, saying that the decision to truncate the syllabus has not been finalised yet. He also made it clear that his department would not remove chapters unnecessarily.

Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah had attacked the government on the issue.

"The government, which has failed to control the spread of coronavirus, is using it as an opportunity to push its clandestine agenda of saffronising the textbooks," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, on completion of one year of his government, today said coronavirus hampered his development plans for the state.

He said the state will not see a lockdown again "at any cost".

"Due to coronavirus we couldn't meet people's expectations but now we'll not have lockdown in Karnataka at any cost. In future we're going to fulfill whatever I announced in Budget. If necessary we'll take loans and complete all development work," said Yediyurappa.

"Covid has hampered development plans of Karnataka, lot more needs to be done, i'm committed to providing an able, stable government," he said.

Arrangements were made for virtual celebrations to mark the one-year anniversary of Yediyurappa government at Banquet Hall in Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. Social distancing was maintained at the event.

A record 5,199 new COVID-19 cases and 82 deaths were reported from Karnataka on Sunday, the state's health department said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state stands at 96,141, including 58,417 active cases and 35,838 recoveries.

So far, 1,878 deaths have been reported from Karnataka. Karnataka is the only state to have over 50,000 active cases with overall tally below 1 lakh.
