Harassed' college girl attempts suicide; students turn violent

Mangalore, September 6: 19-old Shloka Shetty, a second-year B Com student of Sri Ramakrishna College, Bunts Hostel Circle apparently attempted to commit suicide on Tuesday afternoon after being “harassed” by the principal.

The girl was rushed to a private hospital in the city after she consumed phenyl at the toilet on the premises of the college.

The Uppala based Shloka who was staying in a PG accommodation in Ballalbagh, was allegedly “harassed” by the principal Naveen Shetty, for attending a talent show programme on August 30 without prior permission.

It is said that principal had also asked her to fetch her parents to college.

When the students of the college came to know the suicide attempt by the girl, they staged a violent protest and threw stones at the college building and smashed the window panes.

One of the classmates of Shloka accused the principal of torturing students by imposing fines unnecessarily for missing classes.

However, the principal said that he did not harass or torture any student for any reason.

Kadri police rushed to the spot.

Madikeri, Apr 22: The quality of water in the River Cauvery in Kodagu district has improved significantly following the nationwide Lockdown.

The discharge of effluents from home stays and resorts situated on the banks of the river in the district has stopped due to lack of visitors. The discharge of waste water had made the river impure all these years.

The suspension of boat ride in Dubare has reduced the pollution from diesel motorboats in the river. For the last few years, the water quality of the river had reached 'C' category from 'B' category during the summer.

Bengaluru, Feb 2: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Sunday said that the cabinet expansion would take place on February 6, with 13 MLAs taking oath of office. “The cabinet expansion will take place on February 6 with the oath-taking ceremony at the Raj Bhavan at 10.30 AM,” he told reporters in Bengaluru.

Thirteen MLAs, including 10 who had joined BJP from parties, including Congress and the JD(S), will take oath, he said. The cabinet expansion is on the cards for nearly two months ever since the BJP won the maximum number of seats in the December 5 2019 bypolls and got a majority in the Karnataka assembly.

Bengaluru, Jul 20: Karnataka on Monday reported 3,648 COVID-19 cases taking the tally to 67,420, informed the state health department.

According to a bulletin issued by the department, the state recorded 72 more deaths due to COVID-19 with the toll at 1,403 while six patients who tested positive for the infection have died due to non-COVID causes, as of Monday.

There are 42,216 active cases in the state.
As many as 730 patients were discharged today, taking the total discharged patients to 23,795.
Bengaluru recorded the highest number of cases and deaths today at 1,452 and 31, respectively, informed the state health department.

India's COVID-19 case tally crossed the 11-lakh mark with the highest single-day spike of 40,425 new cases and 681 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Monday.

The total cases in the country now stand at 1,118,043 while the death toll is 27,497.

The ministry said the total number of cases include 390,459 active cases and 700,087 cured/discharged/migrated.
