Shirva, September 7: Veteran cricketer Syed Kirmani inaugurated the St. Mary's Cricket Academy at St. Mary's Pre-University College grounds here on Tuesday amidst jubilation.
This professional cricket academy, sponsored by the St. Mary's Old Students Association (SMOSA), would train boys in the age-group of 10 to 16.
The cost of the project, including the preparation of concrete pitches for practice, nets, sports material, and the salary of the coaching staff was estimated at Rs. 2.5 lakh.
Mr. Kirmani urged the students to follow three “Ds” (discipline, dedication and determination) in their life. Students should have clear goals and pursue them with dedication. They should respect their peers. They should pick only good qualities from their friends. Avoid getting distracted from their goals.
They should know what their children were doing. Parents and teachers should identify the talent in students and encourage them. Students should realize that not all could become cricketers. They should use the facilities provided by the St. Mary's Cricket Academy to the optimum to develop their skills.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association had been holding district-level tournaments to select the brightest of the young cricket players, who would later be trained in Bangalore.
Mr. Kirmani, who inaugurated the pitch, batted there for sometime.
Correspondent of St. Mary's and Don Bosco Institutions Stany Tauro presided over the function. SMOSA president K. Gururaj, secretary Mathias Lobo, principal of St. Mary's Pre-University College Felix Andrade, former Mangalore University cricket captain Vijay Alva, businessmen Pramod Madhwaraj and Glen Dias were present.
