Zilla Panchayat tax collection leaves visiting Bihar MLAs impressed

Mangalore, September 9: Members of the Bihar Legislative Committee on Zilla Parishad and Panchayati Raj expressed their happiness over the better state of pachayats in the Karnataka, especially in terms of tax collection system.

As many as 10 members of this 18-member Committee were in Mangalore on Thursday. They are touring different parts of the country to study the panchayat raj system. On Thursday, they met the Chief Executive Officer of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat K.N. Vijay Prakash.

"We want to see the system and suggest changes to our government. We want to imbibe the best practices and strengthen the gram panchayat system in Bihar. Our government wants to reach out to people in villages. We want to reach to the level you have reached," said MLA Anandi Prasad Yadav, who heads the 10-member team.

The members have already visited Bangalore and Mysore. They will be visiting panchayat in Kerala and Goa

Various issues

The MLAs were very curious about tax collection system from the gram panchayats. Mr. Prakash told the MLAs that the 203 gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada were collecting 93 per cent tax. To this, MLA Bhumendra Narayan Singh said, "This is good. Our tax collection has been poor." Mr. Singh pointed that 42 per cent of Bihar population were below the poverty line.

The MLAs were also happy to know about education status of the panchayat members. "The members here represent in a better way. I found this while interacting with panchayat members in Mysore," Mr. Yadav said. They expressed their satisfaction over the water supply system and roads in the district.

The committee members were informed about the Total Sanitation campaign in all the 203 gram panchayats for which Nirmal Gram Puraskars have been awarded. They were informed about the e-governance at the panchayats and also about the campaign to ban the use of plastics. The members were inquisitive about the education system in the district, especially about deemed universities in the district.

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar along with Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday visited Kempegowda International airport for inspection of the screening facility as over 10,000 people from Karnataka stranded in other countries are scheduled to arrive in the state. 

Sudhakar said all safety measures have been taken for the screening and quarantine of all passengers in hotels, hostels, and school buildings.

He appealed to local residents not to panic as adequate safety measures are being taken to prevent any spread of COVID-19 infection.

Bagalkot, April 7: A group of villagers on Monday attacked three Muslim men at Bidari village in Bagalkot district accusing them of being responsible for the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The three men belonging to Mahalingapura village were walking on the road when they were attacked with sticks by people even when they said that they were nowhere connected to Tablighi Jamaat.

This incident happened within the limits of Mudhol Police Station.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Lokesh Jagasalar said that the police is investigating the matter and no one will be spared who all are involved in this act.

"No one will be spared and we have taken the incident seriously and finding whoever harassed three Muslim men, at no cost the incident be defended by anyone, it was unexpected and case will be booked and stringent action will be taken against those who are involved in the incident," Lokesh told news agency.

Mangaluru, Mar 1: Karnataka Minister for Major and Medium Industries Jagadish Shettar said that the flight service between Mangaluru and Hubballi will begin on March 29 under UDAN scheme.

Speaking to reporters on the sideline of the meeting of Industries Commerce of Magaluru, here on Saturday evening, he said while the city of Ports is the second busiest international airport after Bengaluru in Karnataka, other places, namely Hubballi, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Bidar, have come on the air map with the UDAN scheme.

Stating that UDAN launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was what the Golden Quadrilateral highway project of former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee had envisaged, Mr. Shettar noted that more flights are operating to and from Mangaluru now. This has paved the way for Industrialisation of the important city on the Bombay-Karnataka region, he added.
