Manipal, September 8: Lokayukta police have trapped Ravichandra K, Deputy Environment Officer of Karnataka State Environment Control Board, Udupi district, while receiving a bribe of Rs 12,000 from an entrepreneur, at the former's office in Manipal on Thursday morning.

One Ganesh A Nalthur had applied for a no objection certificate for starting a coconut industry by name Nisarga in Yadadi- Mathyadi, in Kundapur taluk. He had paid Rs 5,000 towards the fee at the Environment Control Board office, at Shivalli Industrial Area.

As he was not willing to pay the bribe money of Rs 15,000 demanded by the officials, he lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta.

On Thursday when Ravichandra demanded and received the bribe, a team of Lokayukta police, headed by Inspectors Thimmaia and BP Dinesh Kumar arrested him and produced before the court.

He was remanded to Judicial Custody.

Hubballi, Jan 29: Thousands of people took part in a protest march against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) causing traffic snarl in the city on Tuesday.

Various Dalit organisations had taken part in protest organised under the aegis of the 'Samvidana Samrakshana Samiti'.

KPCC members including MLA Prasad Abbayya, former Minister A.M. Hindasageri and office-bearers also joined the protest.

They congregated first at B.R. Ambedkar Statue near the Head Post Office in Hubballi. Holding flags and banners, the protesters marched from Ambedkar statue to mini Vidhana Soudha covering Lamington Road, Sangolli Rayanna Statue and Kittur Chennamma Circle.

Mr. Abbayya said that despite opposition from various minority communities and progressive organisations, the Union government had not changed its stand. The opposition would continue till the new law was repealed, he said.

He termed the CAA as a draconian law that meted out injustice to not only Muslims but also to Hindus. “Giving citizenship based on documents is highly condemnable. At a time when the country is undergoing an economic slowdown, it is highly condemnable that thousands of crores are being spent to enact the law. The Union government should immediately abolish the new law,” he said.

They submitted a memorandum to the Hubballi tahsildar that was addressed to the President, seeking abolition of the new law. In view of the march, the police had diverted traffic and had made elaborate bandobast.

Mangaluru, Apr 18: Food kits were distributed to as many as 100 needy Beary poets, writers and artistes’ on behalf of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy at a simple ceremony held at the Academy office here on Friday.
 
The service initiative during the Lockdown was taken up as per the guidance of Minister for Kannada and Culture C T Ravi.
 
Dakshina Kannada District in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary distributed the kits to the beneficiaries.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: Yet another covid-19 positive case has been reported from Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. 

Health and Family Welfare Department's latest bulletin revealed that a 47-year-old woman from Panemangaluru in Bantwal was tested positive for the coronavirus. 

With this the total number of covid-19 infected people in Dakshina Kannada rose to 19 out of which 7 are from Bantwal taluk. 

According to sources, this woman was working as a sweeper in a private hospital in the city where a coronavirus victim from Bantwal was being treated before she was shifted to covid-19 hospital.
