Moodbidri, September 9: A middle-aged couple from Hyderabad were conned by a group of robbers at a resort near Alangar here and were defrauded of cash and gold ornaments worth Rs. 2 lakh.

The incident happened on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. The couple had arrived in the town scouting for a suitable bride for their son and were staying at Pandit Resort in Alangar.

The couple had been identified as Rao Babu Reddy and Laksmi Rajyam from Hyderabad. They have been robbed of nine sovereign gold and cash totaling Rs. 7,000, besides a haul of cloths.

The couple had been seeking an alliance for the eldest of their three sons and had advertised in a Hyderabad daily about the matrimonial requirement. They had also given the mobile number along with the advertisement.

Taking note of the mobile number the suspected conman, believed to be from Tumkur, called up the couple and informed them that he knew of a suitable girl from a rich family and asked them to come to Mangalore for talks.

Accordingly the couple arrived in Mangalore by flight on Wednesday afternoon. They were taken to the Resort in Moodbidri by the accused. Late in the evening, he, along with his accomplices, went to their room under the pretext of initiating talks and gave them juice which contained intoxicating material. When the couple became unconscious, he removed the ornaments and other valuables and left the place.

He asked the cab driver to take him to Bangalore as he had few more guests to be picked up from the airport. The gang then cheated the driver when he was filling up at a station in Majestic. Following a complaint by the driver and his owners, the police conducted an inquiry. They also contacted the Moodbidri police in this regard and the whole incident came to light.

A case has been registered at the Moodbidri police station.
