'Hike in bus fare is not fair'

Mangalore, September 14: The September 15 hike in bus fares will not be the last if one reads the intent of Canara Bus Operators Association (CBOA) members.

''The hike of 4 paise per km is measly when you compare the cost of operation per km," said CBOA President Rajavarma Ballal.

CBOA will approach the high court soon to direct state government to expedite the process of issuing a new government notification regarding the fare hike in a scientific manner. ''We want the government to issue a notification which gives a level playing field for both state run and private bus operators. When the bus fares for KSRTC are hiked, it should allow us also to hike bus fares," said Ballal.

''The KSRTC said they could not even wait for a day after the diesel hike, lest they would run into losses. It is two months since we have submitted the memorandum to the transport minister. Who will make good of our losses?" he questioned.

Thoroughly unhappy with RTA fare rates, Ballal said the existing notification (with the RTA) does not allow the hike more than a certain percentage. The CBOA demanded 15% across the board hike from stage I to the last stage.

''We have demanded the government to give us rates which they have given to the KSRTC, though the state-owned Bus Corporation is subsidized heavily by the government, admitting their overheads were higher.

Special train carrying 1,428 migrants departs from Karnataka for Bihar

Bengaluru, May 12: The South Western Railway on Tuesday informed that a 'Shramik special train' has left Karnataka for Bihar carrying 1,428 migrants onboard.

The special train carrying migrants to Motihari, Bihar departed from Kabaka Puttur in Karnataka.

Passengers were observing social distancing norms during boarding.

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had recently granted permission for movement of stranded citizens including migrants labourers, workers, students, tourists to return to their native towns.

As per the list provided by the Karnataka government, South Western Railway is arranging special trains. These special trains are being run from point to point with no stoppages en-route.

Pakistani roommate striving for release of Udupi man arrested in Saudi over offensive Facebook post

Dammam, Feb 3: Harish Bangera, 32, who was arrested in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia more than a month ago after offensive Facebook post went viral, has remained incommunicado.

Bangera, who hails from Goyadibettu in Bijadi village of Kundapur taluk, Udupi district, was an air-conditioning technician for a company in Dammam, capital of Saudi's eastern province.

He was arrested on December 20, 2019 after he posted derogatory messages on Facebook against crown prince Mohammad bin Salman and went on to claim that a Ram temple will be built in the holy city of Makkah too just like in Ayodhya where the Babri mosque was demolished.

Fearing legal action, he later posted a video pleading for forgiveness. “I have committed a mistake. Please forgive me. I will never upload any such posts again," he is seen saying in the video.

After his arrest, his roommate, who happens to be a Pakistani, has reportedly made several attempt to contact him, but in vain. He also has approached many Indian and Saudi authorities in his bid to get Bangera out of prison, sources said.

The Saudi authorities have not even responded to the messages of Indian Ministry of External Affairs. "We've made many efforts to contact the Saudi authorities but they haven't responded,” MEA sources said.

Karnataka's COVID-19 tally crosses 90,000-mark with 5,072 new cases

Bengaluru, July 25: Karnataka reported 5,072 new COVID-19 positive cases and 72 deaths on Saturday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 90,942.

The total count includes 55,388 active cases and 1,796 deaths, the state health department said.

Meanwhile, a 100-year-old woman resident of Huvina Hadagali town in Bellary district here recovered from COVID-19 after testing positive for the virus earlier this month.

"Doctors treated me well. Along with regular food, I was eating an apple a day. The doctors are giving me tablets and injection, and I am healthy now. COVID-19 is like a common cold," said Hallamma while speaking to news agency.

The woman's son, daughter-in-law, and grandson had also tested positive for the virus, and the family was treated at their home.

India reported a spike of 48,916 coronavirus cases on Saturday, taking the total number of reported COVID-19 cases to 13,36,861, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total count include 4,56,071 active cases, 8,49,431 cured/discharged/migrated. With 757 deaths in the last 24 hours, the cumulative toll reached 31,358.
