Six fishermen go missing, one rescued after fishing boat sinks off Mangalore

Mangalore, September 15: Six local fishermen went missing after a trawl boat sank off the coast of Tannirbavi near here in the wee hours of Thursday.

The personnel of coast guard and police are conducting emergency search and rescue operations in the rough waters with the help of local fishermen.

The trawl boat owned by one Nazeer from Farangipet had left Old Port, here, for deep see fishing, nine days ago, with seven fishermen on-board.

The 50 foot boat had reportedly stranded in the troubled waters, a few nautical miles away from the local coast, while returning on Wednesday evening.

According to sources, Srikant, one of the fishermen on-board, had contacted the owner Nazeer through phone around 2 am to inform that water had been penetrating into the vessel. However, the owner lost communications with the fishermen a few minutes later.

Meanwhile, a middle aged Kailas, one of the seven fishermen of the missing boat, was rescued by another fishing boat named 'S M Fisheries', at around 6:30 am.

It is also suspected that the boat might have collided with the wreckage of the MV DenDen, an oil tanker, which had capsized and sank near Tannirbavi in June 2007, with the loss of seven lives.

Udupi, May 29: As many as 15 fresh coronavirus positive cases were reported in Udupi district today. 

11 among the new 15 covid-19 patients are males and four are females. The patients also include two children aged 6 and 7.

All of them are said to be Maharashtra returnees. 

With this, the total confirmed covid-19 cases in the district mounted to 164.

Mangaluru, May 4: District Health Officer Dr Ramachandra Bairi on Monday said that a special team, comprising of six members, has been constituted to find the source of Corona infection in Dakshina Kannada .

The team is expected to file its report by May 6. It is still not clear if Bantwal was the source was the infection or not.

He said 1st phase of investigation in this regard is complete and the samples taken on the 12th day will give a clear picture.

Udupi, May 24: Three among the 18 coronavirus positive cases reported in Udupi district today were policemen. 

A police constable of Karkala Rural Police Station and ASI of Ajekar Police Station were tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday and authorities have taken steps to seal the Police Stations they were working. A policeman from Brahmavar police station also tested positive.

The district administration reported seal Karkala Rural Police station, Ajekar Police Station, and Brahmavar Police Station. Apart from them Karkala Town Station and Circle station are being sealed. All the policemen and policewomen working in these five stations will be quarantined.

Superintendent of Police N Vishnuvardha said that ''all the primary contacts of the police officers who were tested positive will undergo screening and their swabs will be collected and sent to Lab for test.''
