150 years of freedom struggle' celebrations in Ullal

Mangalore, September 16: To commemorate the 150th year of Indian struggle for Independence, Samskruthi Manthralaya, New Delhi and Kannada and Culture Department, Bangalore, will jointly organise the 150th year celebration and cultural programmes in memory of Tippu Sulthan on September 17 and 18 at Uchila Bovi Higher Primary School Hall in Someshwar.

Informing the same to the media persons, Kannada and Culture Department Assistant Director Mangala V Naik said that District-in-Charge Minister Krishna J Palemar will inaugurate the programme on September 17 at 5.30 pm.

MLA U T Khader will preside over the programme and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Zilla Panchayat Member Sahish Kumpala and others will be the guests.

On the same day, various cultural programmes will be performed including patriotic songs by Namritha Kini and team, dance ballet by Pramod Ullal and troupe, Yakshagana performance by Ganesh Pura Girish Navuda and team, she informed.

The cultural programmes will also be held on September 18 evening.

Three days art camp will be held from September 16 to 18 in the memory of Tippu Sulthan.

MLA U T Khader will inaugurate the camp. Senior artistes like Shivananda Nayak, Prasanna Acharya, D Prasad Rao, Navin Kumar G and others will take part in the camp.

Various competitions will be held for men and women on September 18 from 2 pm to 5 pm to mark the occasion, said Naik.

Mangaluru, Feb 11: Renowned journalist and winner of Magsaysay award, P Sainath will be in Mangaluru on February 14 & 15 at St. Aloysius College (Autonomous). He will speak on the topic ‘Indian democracy in post liberalisation and post truth era’.

P Sainath’s two-day visit to St. Aloysius College will also feature a workshop by the veteran journalist on his rural development project PARI (People’s Archives of Rural India). It is a part of the tenth edition of Media Manthan, a National level media fest organised by the post-graduate department of Journalism and Mass Communication of St. Aloysius College.

P. Sainath is a veteran journalist and media activist who has an avid interest in rural reporting. People’s Archives of Rural India (PARI), a digital journalism platform is an initiative put forward by him which aims to document rural Indian lives and livelihood. Sainath is also a teacher who has trained over 1000 media persons across 27 years.

Media Manthan is a media festival by the PG Department of Mass Communication of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous). Besides endowment lecture and workshop by P. Sainath, the fest holds various media-related competitions for the students of various colleges from across the state.

Belgaum, Jan 1: Police detained a group of around eight people who were allegedly trying to hoist 'Uttara Karnataka flag' in Hire Bagewadi area here on Wednesday.

This comes amid tensions between Karnataka and neighbouring Maharashtra over the border issue with protests on both sides, which have also led to the cancellation of bus services between the two states.

Protesters in Belagavi burnt an effigy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, following which Shiv Sena workers had launched a protest near the Kolhapur bus stand on Sunday, and burnt an effigy of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

The long-standing border dispute between the two states over is pending before the Supreme Court for several years.

On December 7, Thackeray had chaired a high-level meeting over the border dispute between two states. It was decided in the meeting that attempts will be made to get fast track hearing in Supreme Court on the issue.

Bengaluru, May 27: Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa on Wednesday said that his government will re-open temples, mosques and churches in the state after May 31.

"We are going to open temples, mosques and churches in the state after May 31, he said while speaking to media in Bengaluru.

The Chief Minister added that the "guidelines will be followed" as suggested by experts for opening the worship places.

"We have no objections to open malls and cinema halls, but we are waiting for the guidelines of the central government, Prime Minister will take decisions to allow malls and cinemas to open," he added.

Yediyurappa has said that people from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu will not be allowed in the state till May 31.
