GP by-elections: Three elected unopposed; 87 candidates in fray for 35 seats in DK

Mangalore, September 16: At least Three candidates have been elected unopposed to by-elections scheduled for 38 posts lying vacant in 35 Gram-Panchayats of Dakshina Kannada district.

As many as 87 candidates, including 62 men and 25 women are in fray for remaining 35 seats.

After the last date for withdrawal of nominations on Thursday, candidates contesting Kodman-1 seat in Meramajalu GP in Bantwal taluk, and Kaukrady-2 seat in Kaukrady GP and Bilinele-1 seat in Bilinele GP, both in Puttur taluk were declared elected unopposed.

The elections will be held on September 25 and the counting will be held on September 29.

In Mangalore taluk, elections will be held for vacant posts in Daregudde, Beluvai, Paladka, Permude, Jokatte, Moodushedde, Mucchur, Edapadav, Kuppepadav, Gurpur, Neermarga, Pavoor and Manjanady.

The vacant seats in Bantwal taluk are at Pilathabettu, Kavalamudoor, Navoor, Amtadi, Meramajalu, Ira, Vittal, Peruvai and Sajipamunnur.

In Belthangady taluk, elections will be held at Marodi, Venur, Ujire, Kuvettu, Niddle.

In Puttur taluk, the vacant seats are at Kaukradi, Bilinele, Narimogaru and Bettampady.

In Sullia, the seas are vacant at Subrahmanya, Balila and Bellare.

Mangaluru, Jun 29: Senior IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash today took over as the new commissioner of police of Mangaluru city.

He replaced Dr P S Harsha, who was recently transferred and posted as the Deputy Inspector General and Commissioner of Information and Public Relations.

Before coming to Mangaluru as city police chief, Vikash Kumar was the Deputy Inspector General of Police and Commander of Anti Naxal Force.

He had also served as the superintendent of police of Chikkamagaluru district.

Bengaluru, Apr 10: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, expressing his concern over the plight of stray animals struggling during lockdown, called upon people to feed the animals near their houses and provide them drinking water.

In a tweet he said "Due to scorching heat and Lockdown, cats, dogs and birds are suffering without water and food. In cities this situation much serious. So I appeal to people that people should see that dogs and birds their get food and water.

Please be kind and take some time off to feed stray animals and birds around your homes. Try providing them with water and leftovers so they're not parched and left hungry. Stray animals depend on wastes and leftovers from hotels and restaurants and have been hit by the Lockdown to check the spread of Corona virus.

Mangalore, Jan 15: In one of the biggest seizure of gold in the new decade, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths here have seized five kg of gold valued at Rs two Crore from the Air Cargo Complex at International Airport here recently.

Acting on a tip-off the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Bangalore and Mangalore in a co-ordinated effort unraveled a unique modus of smuggling of gold through Air Cargo Complex, at old airport, Bajpe Mangalore two days back, According to release issued here on Tuesday evening.

The smuggled gold was concealed in five metal sprockets which were imported by M/s Swaroop Mineral Pvt Ltd of Udupi in the name of “mining conveyor drive chain”.
