Prefer Kannada over Tulu, Beary script: Linguist

Mangalore, September 18: Noted linguist and lexicographer U P Upadhyaya said that there was no need to invent its own script for Beary language, as it could easily be written in Kannada.

Speaking on the topic 'regionalism in Beary language' at a programme organised by Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy here on Sunday, he strongly argued that both Beary and Tulu should be written in Kannada, despite the fact that Tulu has its own script.

He warned that using an unfamiliar script for a local language would only lead to the isolation of that language.

The linguist also pointed out that language exists only in dialects and not in script. He went on to describe the script as nothing but a photograph of the spoken word.

Borrow and grow

Mr Upadhyaya said that a language can grow by borrowing words from other languages. “We should be ready to accept words from other languages without any hesitation”, he said.

Stating that no language is complete and self dependent, he said around 80 per cent of the vocabulary of any language is borrowed from other language.

He said that that Tulu, despite being the regional language of Tulu Nadu, contains around 80 per cent of words from Tamil, Malayalam, Sanskrit and Arabic roots.

Maddur, Feb 7: Two daily wage workers were buried alive after a heap of mud collapsed on them near the Agriculture Department office on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, in Maddur of Mandya district on Thursday night, police said on Friday.

Police said that the deceased, Kashinath (37), and Rajgandh (30), were working at a site of the ongoing Bengaluru-mysuru highway development project.

Udupi, Apr 24: While several state governments and NGOs are actively working to provide essentials to the needy amid the COVID-19 lockdown, a fisherwoman in Karnataka's Udupi has proved that even a small gesture of help for others can make a huge difference in the society.
A fisherwoman, Sharadakka, distributed rice to 140 needy families in her neighbourhood during the ongoing lockdown. The contribution was made by spending all her life savings amounting to Rs 30,000. The amount was saved by her over a period of time in an effort to build a house for herself.
On Thursday Udupi Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh visited her and ensured help to build her house.
"Spending her meagre earnings, Sharadakka generously filled many empty stomachs amid the nation-wide lockdown, which is a matter of pride," said the Deputy Commissioner.

Udupi, Jan 16: Admar Mutt Junior seer Eshapriya Theertha Swami is all set to take over the reins of Krishna Mutt during the 250th Paryayotsava, scheduled to be held on January 17 and 18.

The uniqueness lies in the fact that the Admar Mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts of Krishna Mutt in this Temple town Udupi, ushers in the new Paryaya cycle (32nd). The Paryaya of outgoing seer Vidyadheesha Theertha Swami of Palimaru Mutt, Admar’s dwandwa (associate) mutt, marks the end of the cycle of eight mutts.

Under the system initiated by the Madhwa philosopher and saint Madwacharya, the seers of Ashta mutts would take turns to worship Lord Krishna every two months. Seer Vadiraja (1481-1601) ended the system and introduced the system of f running the temple administration once in two years.
