Body of fishing tragedy victim laid to rest at Kuloor

Mangalore, September 19: The identity of the body of one among the six men went missing on Thursday off Mangalore coast has been established.

The body of Abdul Rahman (35), one among the six fishermen onboard the ill-fated Ocean Fisheries-2 boat, was spotted by the Coast Guard on Saturday evening and was brought to the shore early on Sunday.

The body of Rahman, a resident oPanjimogaru and son of late Abdul Khader of Beedinabali, was handed over to the relatives after post-mortem at the Wenlock mortuary here on Sunday afternoon.

The mayyat was given a ghusul at the Jumma Masjid in Bunder and was then brought to his residence in Panjimogaru. The burial took place at Kuloor Jumma Masjid burial ground at 4pm, according to family sources.

Abdul Rahman had started a transport company 10 years ago. He then took up the matt manufacturing unit and was supplying floor matt to various masjids in and around Mangalore. Of late he had developed interest in fishing activities and was working as a cook onboard Ocean Fisheries-2 for the past six months. He was also well-versed in spreading the net and catching the fish, recalls Naushad Bavu, a resident of Panjimogaru.

Abdul Rahman is survived by wife, two sons. The eldest son Mohammed Rafeek is studying in first standard while the other son five-year-old Mohammed Rasheed is in LKG.

Abdul Rahman was looking forward to returning home after completing the eight-day fishing voyage on Thursday when their boat met with an accident near Alive Bagilu. Of the seven men onboard the ship, one was rescued (Vincent from Thiruvananthapuram)and brought to the shore. The dead bodies of the remaining five victims are yet to be traced.

Former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah tests positive for COVID-19

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said that he has tested positive for COVID-19 and admitted himself to a hospital.

"I have been tested positive for COVID-19 and also been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors as a precaution. I request all those who had come in contact with me to check out for symptoms and to quarantine themselves," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Earlier on Sunday, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had said that he tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

4,752 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Monday, taking total cases to 1,39,571 including 62,500 discharges and 2,594 deaths, the State Health Department informed.

Covid-19: Special action plan for Kasargod district

Kasaragod, Apr 1: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday announced a special action plan for Kasargod district where more people testing positive to the Coronovirous.

"The northern most district of the State has become the hot bed of Coronavirus infection with the maximum number of positive cases confirmed in Kerala," the Chief Minister told a press conference at the Government Secretariat.

“A special action plan will be implemented in Kasargod. Currently, Kasargod district has the maximum number of positive cases and also the highest number of people under hospital observation. Data from the panchayats in the district will be used to test people with symptoms and also to identify people in contact with them," he said.

Sedition charges against Dr Zafarul Islam Khan for warning bigots sparks row

Newsroom, May 2: The Delhi Police’s move to book Delhi Minorities Commission chairman Zafarul Islam Khan under sedition charges over his social media statement condemning Hindutva bigots has raised many eyebrows.

A pubic statement has been issued in solidarity with Zafarul Islam Khan by a group of NGOs and citizens which condemned the media trial targeting Khan.

The statement demanded legal action against those who are distorting Khan's Facebook post and spreading false propaganda against him.

Delhi Police Special Cell registered the FIR against Khan on the complaint of a Vasant Kunj resident. The complaint came to the Lodhi Colony office of the special cell, after the assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Safdarjung Enclave forwarded it.

The investigation has been handed over to special cell inspector Praveen Kumar.

According to the FIR, Khan has been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code -- 124 A (sedition) and 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc,).

Khan on April 28 had posted controversial comments on his Facebook page. "Mind you, bigots, Indian Muslims have opted until now not to complain to the Arab and Muslim world about your hate campaigns and lynchings and riots. The day they are pushed to do that, bigots will face an avalanche," Khan had written on Facebook.

However, the Delhi Minorities Commission's chief on Friday had apologised for his controversial remark and had said that he never tried to tarnish the image of India. He also removed the controversial post from the social media and issued a prolonged clarification.
