Panjimogaru residents demand high level probe into double murder

Mangalore, September 19: Residents of Panjimogaru on Monday staged a protest in the city, demanding a high level inquiry into the brutal murder of a mother and her daughter occurred nearly three months ago.

35-year-old house wife Razia and her 8-year old daughter Fathima Zuha were murdered in their two-story house at Panjimogaru in Kavoor police station limits on June 28. Despite a prolonged investigation the Mangalore police have remained clueless about the identity of the killers and the motive.

Frustrated by the failure of police department in solving this case, over five dozes of local residents under the banner of Democratic Youth Federation of India, gathered outside the office of DK Deputy Commissioner and strongly demanded that the investigation of the case should be handed over either to the Central Bureau of Investigation or the Crime Investigation Department.

Addressing the protesters DK district unit president of DYFI Muneer Katipalla said that the failure of police in this case has created a sense of insecurity among the local residents.

He also said that if the offenders were not apprehended, it would create a sense of impunity among criminals and encourage them to carry out such acts in future, he said.

Mr Katipalla said that residents of Panjimogaru and surrounding area have lost trust in local police, who have resorted to unscientific method of investigation and trying to make family members and local people scape goat to hide their inability.

Congress leader Moideen Bava, Mangalore city unit president of DYFI Imtiyaz BK and Dayanand Shetty were present among others.

Udupi, May 2: During the lockdown period the Department of Public Library digitised more books to the Karnataka Digital Public Library (KDPL).

According to the data released by the KDPL issued here on Saturday , as on April 29, 89,239 people from the State have already registered for the digital library.  From these 1,807 are from Dakshina Kannada district and 605 from the Udupi district.

The digital library already has a repository of 35,500 e-books, 4,800 videos, 59,980 e-journals and 1,112 items for children.

Kozhikode, Jun 14: A mosque in Kuttichira of Kozhikode has found a unique way to avoid crowding amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee that runs the mosque has started issuing smart cards to people for offering prayers and simultaneously encouraging social distancing.

"The committee has given smart cards with numbers to the people in the surroundings of the Masjid. One who enters the mosque premises has to rub their hands with sanitizers. They also have to tell their identity on camera. The automatic system has been put in place to save the address and phone number. Next time onwards they have to say their smart card number only so that other details will be automatically filled," said Muhammad Sajjad, who is part of the Mosque committee.

"The door of the mosque will open automatically after swiping the card. We have fit in a sensor on the doors. We have also made marks inside the mosque area so that people can abide by social distancing norm," he added.

A couple of days back the Kerala government has rolled out an order allowing the opening of places of worship, malls and restaurants from June 9 in strict accordance with guidelines and social distancing norms. As per the guidelines, pregnant women and those with co-morbidities should not visit any places of worship. Those with symptoms should not be allowed.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: There is a wide spread criticism by the Janata Dal(S) and Congress leaders over a proposal to rename Ramanagaram district as New (Nava) Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister CM Yediyurappa said on Monday.

“An unnecessary discussion on renaming Ramanagaram is under way. There is no thought before the government over renaming," The CM accused the Congress and JD(S) leaders of indulging in baseless discussion to mislead the people and to remain relevant. "There is no such agenda before the government. It is a joke that JD(S) and Congress leaders are starting a fight over it.”

The Chief Minister’s clarification came after criticism by former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who carved out the Ramanagaram district when he was Chief Minister, and former Minister DK Shivakumar whose Kanakapura constituency is in Ramanagaram district, after Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan said Ramanagaram could be renamed as Nava Bengaluru to increase investments prospects.
