Daily wage worker brutally beaten up by police on theft charge

Belthangady, September 20: In a heartrending case of police torture, a daily wage worker from Naravi has been abused by the police in Venur under the pretext of an inquiry.

Jaya Poojary has been undergoing treatment at the Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore since last Wednesday.

A theft had been reported at a home in Naravi on Monday. A complaint had been registered at the police station with regard to the incident. The police picked up Jaya Poojary, who was working as coolie at Shankar Narayan Bhat's home and was subjected to physical harassment at the police stationi.

“They wanted me to accept that I had stolen the money. Show us where is the money?” the police kept asking me even as the assault continued throughout the day.

In the evening the police let off Poojary after his relatives came to the station inquiring about him. On reaching home Jaya poojary complained of pain and sickness. He was taken to the Belthangady government hospital from where he was shifted to Wenlock hospital for further treatment.

His face remains swollen after the police assault. As he has been attacked with cane all over the body he cannot stand on his own. He is also facing difficulty in discharging urine. “Two constables kept beating me up,” says Jaya Poojary.

Meanhwile, the Venur police arrested a suspect in connection with the theft. Following this, the police have contacted Jaya Poojary and warned him not to reveal anything to the outside world. “We will fix you in some other case if you try reveal the atrocities,” he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 24: The state government on Tuesday published names and addresses of 14,000 people who have been placed under home quarantine, on its website.  

A district wise break up of the home quarantine patients was also provided.  

Notably, the number of coronavirus cases has risen to 41 in the state.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Tuesday criticised BJP-led Karnataka government for limiting or omitting various topics including chapters on 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali.

Speaking to media here at Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office, Shivakumar said Congress will not allow BJP government in Karnataka to "divert history".

"Tipu Sultan does not belong to one caste or a class. He is part of the history of this country. BJP government has removed chapters related to him for its political advantage. It is their decision whether they celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti or not, but he is part of our history. 

The President of this country Ramnath Kovind came to the Vidhan Sabha and praised Tipu's patriotism during a joint session," Shivakumar said.

"The BJP government has come to power today. Our history should not change. We will not let these people to covert or dilute history. This is the stand of the Congress party. Our experts will study the pros and cons of this decision," he added.

Shivakumar further said many countries around the world have praised the Constitution, Indian history and expressed their willingness to "adapt it".

"But the BJP is trying to curtail this. We need to educate our children. Our team will also study this and we will not let this happen," he said.
The Karnataka government, in a bid to reduce the syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent, has limited or omitted various topics including chapters on Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 social science textbook.

The reduction in syllabus comes as schools are closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state, and classes have been moved online.
The Department of Public Instruction of the Karnataka government also limited or removed various other topics from the syllabus of class 6 to 10 as they were repeated or can be alternatively taught.

Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had revised the syllabus for the classes IX to XII for the academic session 2020-21 in a "one-time measure" owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bengaluru, May 23: Karnataka reported 216 covid-19 positive cases in last 24 hours, marking the highest single day spike in the state ever since the first case was detected on 8 March. 187 of these 216 patients have recently returned from Maharashtra.

A 32-year old male resident of Bengaluru died on Saturday making it the 42nd fatality in the state.

The spike on Saturday takes the total number of covid-19 positive closer to the 2,000 mark and the number of active cases to 1,307 in the state, according to the daily health bulletin of the health department.

Yadgir in northern Karnataka recorded 72 cases on Saturday while Raichur recorded 40 cases. Cases in the sugarcane growing region of Mandya continued to rise as 28 people tested positive on Saturday that takes the total number of active cases to 211 as against Bengaluru that has 124.

Gadag registered 15 cases while Bengaluru recorded 4 cases.

Most of those who tested positive on Saturday had returned from other states, especially Maharashtra, one of the worst affected regions in the country.

The spike in cases comes even as the B.S.Yediyurappa-led state government is deliberating further easing of lockdown restrictions post 31 May. The state government has already resumed public bus and train services as well to facilitate inter-district movement of people that has added to fears of spreading the virus from cities to villages where healthcare infrastructure is poor and inadequate.

Karnataka will also see domestic flight arrivals from Monday.

In a statement on Saturday, Bengaluru International Airport said that it introduced ‘Parking-to-Boarding contactless’ journey.

“We have introduced innovative contactless procedures to minimise exposure at the Airport. These enhancements demonstrate our continued commitment to keep our passengers safe in this environment," said Hari Marar, managing director and chief executive of the airport said in a statement on Saturday.
