Low conviction rate due to overdependence on corroborative witnesses: Jaamdar

Mangalore, September 21: Almost 95 per cent of the reported crimes in this country go unpunished due to the poor criminal justice system, lamented S M Jaamdar, Principal Home Secretary, Government of Karnataka.

Inaugurating a new post-graduation course -M Sc in Criminology and Forensic Science - at the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, here, on Wednesday, he said overdependence on corroborative witnesses is one of the weaknesses of criminal justice system in India.

“In the present situation if 100 crimes are reported, accused in five are punished and rest go unpunished,” he said.

He pointed out that millions of cases in various courts across the country are pending for many years.

He opined that criminal trials in most cases fail mainly because witnesses turn hostile and not much importance is given to conclusive scientific evidence.

“If we want to change this situation, we have to depend more on conclusive evidence based on modern investigations tools than witnesses”, he suggested.

Mr Jaamdar also said that the bringing a criminal to books is the responsibility of civil society. “This mentality may have an impact on overall conviction rates across India”, he said.

Dr Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner, Alok Mohan, IGP, Western Range, Seemanth Kumar Singh, City Police Commissioner and Labhu Ram, Superintendent of Police were present among others.

Hassan, May 8: A newly married couple accidentally fell into the Hemavathi river and drowned while clicking selfies near Henneli village in the district, police said on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Kritika (23) of the same village and Artheesh (27) of Belur taluk in the district.

They got married on March 20. Both were working in Bengaluru and were in the village due to the lockdown.

Shivamogga, Aug 9: Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi on Saturday virtually inaugurated Malgudi Museum at Arasalu in Karantaka's Shivamogga.

The old station building at Arasalu has been converted into museum.
BJP MP from Shivamogga BY Raghavendra said that the old station building at Arasalu has been renovated keeping with 'Malgudi' theme in mind.

"It is a tribute to the makers of the popular television serial 'Malgudi Days' as the station features predominantly in the episodes which broadcast on Doordarshan in the 1980s," he said.

The museum has been designed by a famous artist John Devraj, who was the part of the serial Malgudi Days. The Mysore Divisional Railway funded the museum.

"The approach road and station area wear a new transformed look. The innovative idea of having a tea-shop in a narrow gauge coach at Arasalu station adds charm to the green surroundings," the MP said.

"Popular and internationally acclaimed serial Malgudi Days was shot here in Arasalu. The SWR Mysore division manager Aparna Garg helped to transform the station to fictional village Malgudi," he added.

The museum is about 30 km from Shivamogga city. It has steam engines and bogies besides collections of photographs hanging on the wall taken during the time of shooting for Malgudi Days.

Bellary, Jan 4: A BJP MLA has apparently threatened 'minority' Muslims against participating in anti-CAA protests, saying that opposing the new Citizenship Act will not be good for them and they will have to face serious repercussions.

"It's just a caution for those who are protesting against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). We are 80 per cent and you (Muslims) are 18 per cent. Imagine what will happen if we take charge," MLA Somashekar Reddy told a gathering here on Friday.

"Beware of the majority when you live in this country. This is our country. If you want to live here, you will have to, like the Australian Prime Minister said, follow the country's traditions," he added.

He said: "So, I warn you that CAA and NRC are made by Modi and Amith Shah. If you will go against these acts, it won't be good."

Continuing to spew venom, the MLA further said, "If you wish, you can go to Pakistan. We don't have any issues. Intentionally, we would not send you."

He said that the community should live in harmony with Hindus. "If you will act as enemies, we should also react like enemies," he said.

Earlier, Bengaluru BJP MP Tejaswi Surya reportedly called CAA opposers as "puncturewalas".

The nation has been witnessing massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). But Prime Minister Narendra Modi has specifically stated that the NRC was never discussed.
