Missing fishermen's bodies unlikely to be recovered

Mangalore, September 22: It is the sixth day since the boat mishap at high seas on last Thursday and the chances of recovering the bodies of the five fishermen lost at sea are becoming bleak. Trawl Boat Owners Association committee member Mohan Bengre told TOI that usually bodies are recovered or washed ashore within three days of a mishap.

"The chances of finding the bodies after five days are very slim,'' he added. The lone body recovered on Saturday was that of Abdul Rahiman from Panjimogaru. Bengre says generally as a thumb rule, debris and bodies wash ashore if the spot of occurrence is within three to four nautical miles off the coast. With this incident occurring at high seas, that too 30 nautical miles off the coast the bodies would now have drifted, decomposed and would have become fish meal,'' he said.

Bengre pointed out the rough sea, changing direction of wind and currents would have taken the body far away from the Mangalore coast, probably southwards. He also said even if fishermen find the body now they would not dare to get the body inside their boats as it would be putrefied. Even if someone dared to tie a rope to a part of the body and drag it, there is no guarantee that it would reach the shore due to the state of the body,'' he added. Bengre says only Indian Coast Guard could be of help in such cases. Dr Suresh Shetty, head, Department of Forensic Medicine, Kasturba Medical College (KMC) said decomposition of a body depends on many factors though the process in water is slower than in open air.

If the body has a wound or if aquatic animals have bitten the body, chances of getting the bodies intact or otherwise is rare,'' he said. Fisheries deputy director Suresh Kumar Ullal also agrees that finding bodies after so many days after the incident is rare. Of the seven fishermen on board that ill-fated boat, one identified as Vincent survived.

Others whose bodies have not been found are: Narayana Gowda (22) from Koppal, driver Srikanth (42) from Kamalapura, Hospet, Ramkumar Gowda (45) of Vasco Da Gama, Goa, Bishaq alias Vijayakumar from Hubli and Shivakumar. The identity of the last persons is still a suspect as no one has come forward to lodge a complaint about their missing.

Lockdown violators punished by police in UP, Karnataka

Mau/ Kalaburagi, Mar 26: Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday asked lockdown violators in Mau to do push-ups and squats as a punishment.
In Karnataka's Kalaburagi, police personnel punished the violators of the lockdown.
In his address to the nation on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.
According to the Health Ministry, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in India reached 606, including 43 foreign nationals.

PIL in High Court for preventing religious conversion of SC/ST

New Delhi, Mar 12: A PIL was moved in the Delhi High Court on Thursday seeking directions to the Centre to take appropriate steps for stopping religious conversion of socially and economically downtrodden people, particularly of the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe community.

The plea claims that the government has done nothing to stop religious conversions.

The plea is listed before a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar on Friday.

The petition, by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, alleges that many individuals, NGOs and institutions are converting downtrodden persons by "intimidating, threatening, luring by monetary benefits and by other acts, including miracle healing, black magic and more".

"Many individuals/organizations have started conversions of SC/STs in rural areas and the situation is very alarming. The mass religious conversion of the socially economically downtrodden men, women and children, and, in particular of the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe community, is on the rise in the last 20 years," the petition claims.

It further claims as per the 2011 census, Hindus constitute 79 per cent of the population down from 86 per cent in 2001 and if no action is taken "Hindus will become minority in India".

Upadhyay suggested enacting of a law to prevent conversions by force or deceit and to award jail term for any violation.

"Additionally, the State may empower the National Human Rights Commission to deal with the affairs of religious groups and analyse religious discrimination among them," he suggests.

Apart from seeking steps to prevent religious conversions by force, threats or deceit, the petition also wants directions prohibiting religious gatherings "intended to mislead people by making false and untenable claims" to lure ignorant masses to join a particular faith or religious group.

First of all we should know what is religion and what is its purpose.

Religion should be scientific to acceptance. It should not be blind tale.

Religion is a set of divine commands how to lead the life to be successful here and also it should lead to success if there is a life after the death.

If it can assure, we should not worry to accept. Such religion can not be more than 1. Because we all believe 1 Supreme God who has the control over every creature. If we understand and accept it, then we should accept 1 and only religion which is the real religion.

You can not force anybody to accept 2+2=5.

If religion can prove its doctrine to be not contradicting the science then no worry to accept it.

There should be open debate of all religions then the truth will come in black and white clearly.

Leave the panel to decide which is the right one. Once proved, brave people will accept it without fear.

No need any law. If you have good product why do you worry to sell it.

PM Modi praises Karnataka’s covid battle, remains silent on unpaid salaries of front-line warriors

Bengaluru, June 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today praised the Karnataka government for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing the silver jubilee celebrations of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) via a digital platform, he spoke about the Karnataka government's efforts.

He appreciated the work of front-line warriors who are fighting every day in the war against COVID-19 and stressed the need to respect them.

"Doctors and other medical workers are soldiers without wearing the uniform of soldiers. Any kind of attack or violence against them is not acceptable," said Modi.

"There are incidents of violence against the front-line warriors. Any kind of abuse, violence or rude behaviour is not acceptable. The world is looking at doctors and medical staff with gratitude," he said.

"This is the biggest crisis since the two World Wars," the prime minister said. "Pre- and post-COVID-19, the world will be different. The discussions now at a global level are humanity-centric."

Stressing the importance of medical infrastructure, the prime minister spoke about the decision taken by the Union Government to set up a medical college in every district.

"A nation like ours has to have the medical infrastructure and medical education. Now, every district is going to have a medical college," he said.

However, the PM remained silent on salaries of front-line warriors. The Karnataka government has so far not released the salaries of doctors, nurses and lab technicians hired under National Health Mission.
