'Upholding human rights is the only way to ensure national security'

Mangalore, September 23: One of the most urgent tasks before the human rights community in India is to focus consistently on the root causes of human rights violation both nationally and internationally and its specific political context, according to Nadoja Dr Justice S R Nayak, Chairperson, Karnataka State Human Rights Commission.

Addressing the students as chief guest at the inaugural session of the UGC sponsored national seminar on 'Human Rights –Changing Trends and Challenges in India' organised by St Agnes College, here on Friday, Mr Nayak said that the war on terror is an attack on rights and dignity of the workers, urban and rural poor. “According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, at least 30 million full time workers in the US have been laid off since Reagan”, he said.

He pointed out that in 50 countries there are officially 25 million internally displaced people apart from 15 million refugees.

Mr Nayak also said that there is a need to focus on the fact that the human rights violations on a world scale are due to the unfair terms of international trade and have resulted in destruction of millions of culture, economies and ecology.

“We should counter the argument that human rights must be sacrificed for national security – in fact preservation of human rights standards is the only way to ensure our nation remains secure; human rights violations leads to greater alienation of the victims,” he said.

He also said that fighting against the systematic criminalisation of minorities as a whole; this requires a clear vision on the rights of minorities within a democratic polity.

“Systematic documentation of violation of human rights and specific context in which it occurs; expose the corporate interests that are promoting the war against terror,” he said adding that minorities individually and their organisations are the specific targets of this war against terror.

He said it is essential in the country to ensure the decent and dignified life to all by extending the benefits of socio-economic justice measures, safety and security and to develop a concept of solidarity which is based on a vision of multi-cultural society but distinguish it from State sponsored integration policies which are both patronising and oppressive.

“This could be achieved only by a good governance”, he added.

M Veerappa Moily, Central Minister for Corporate Affairs inaugurated the programme. Dr Shashikala Gurpur, Member, Central Law Commission, India, delivered key note address.

Dr M Prem D'Souza AC, Principal, St Agnes College (Autonomous) presided over the programme.

Mangaluru, Jul 11: Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has set up an expert committee to look into the cause of deaths of covid patients in Dakshina Kannada.

The development comes after eight more fatalities including that of a CISF personnel attached to MRPL, were reported in the district on Friday.

The district has recorded 23 deaths since July 1 and 38 death cases have been reported in the district since April 19.

Of the 38 deaths, five were from outside the district. All the eight patients, who lost their battle to the virus in the district on Friday, were suffering from co-morbidities.

According to the govt bulletin on Covid-19 cases, comorbid conditions, like kidney failure, brain tumour, TB, pneumonia, liver damage, high BP, diabetes and others, were the main reasons behind the Covid-19 deaths reported in the district.

Bengaluru, Apr 2: About 1,500 people from Karnataka might have attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin in the national capital between March 8 to 20. Of these, the State has been able to trace 800 people.
 
Of the 800 persons, 143 people have been found to be symptomatic.
 
Mr Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), in a statement here on Thursday said that the Centre had sent the list of 1,500 people to the State.
 
“We cannot say if all these have attended the congregation. Some of them may have attended and some may be the contacts of those who have attended. We have been able to trace 800 from the list and samples of 143 symptomatic persons have been sent for tests."

Bengaluru, Jun 27: Marijuana or ganja as it is known locally, has emerged as the most peddled and seized drug in Karnataka in the first six months of 2020, a police officer has said, commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

"As many as 510 ganja cases have been registered, leading to the seizure of 312 kg of ganja in 2020," Central Crime Branch (CCB) Deputy Commissioner of Police Kuldeep Jain told media perrsons on Friday.

Cases and seizures of other drugs paled in comparison to Marijuana. Only one case each has been registered on Brown Sugar, Opium and other drug forms.

Hashish was the only other seized narcotic which weighed more than a kg at 17 kg, rest all were under a kg.

Other banned substances included charas, cocaine and MDMA.

Police also seized 91 papers of LSD and 550 tablets belonging to the Yaba, Restyl, Anxit and Nitrosun category of drugs.

Similarly, 781 Indians and 14 foreigners have been arrested in the drugs cases.

Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Director General of Police Praveen Sood and Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao were among the officials who commemorated the event which recognised police staff who cracked drug cases.

"Bommai reaffirmed the pledge to fight against drugs and continue the policy of zero tolerance (of drug abuse)," Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil said.

Police showcased the seized haul of drugs to Bommai in the past one year, and the minister later rewarded the policemen involved in cracking the drugs cases in Karnataka.

Bommai and the police officials took a pledge to fight drugs on the occasion.

"The Karnataka police has been taking strict action against the drug peddlers while at the same time creating awareness among youth," added JCP Sandeep Patil.

Police also roped in celebrities such as Milana Nagaraj, Darling Krishna and former cricketer Anil Kumble to send across a social message to give up drugs.
