Seemanth, Labhu Ram taken to task for errant subordinates

Mangalore, September 24: City police chief Seemanth Kumar Singh and Dakshina Kannada SP Labhu Ram came in the crosshairs of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) which ticked them off for their failure to keep a check on errant subordinates. SHRC chairperson S R Nayak in particular was peeved at failure of city police in detecting the double murder case of a mother and daughter and a cab driver and repeated instances of moral policing here.

Chairing a public grievances hearing here on Saturday, Nayak took exception to the 'alleged' high-handed behaviour of police inspector Ravish Nayak in beating up Prem Michael Crasta at the behest of a zilla panchayat member. He instructed Seemanth to initiate action against the official. When P B DSa of PUCL complained that police were targeting innocents in the Panjimogaru double murder case, Nayak sought an explanation from Seemanth.

"We are trying our best to deal with the case," Seemanth said, adding that it was not a murder for gain. When DSa persisted that police were trying to browbeat youths into confessing their involvement in the murder, Nayak said, "I will instruct my IGP to hold a thorough probe in to the incident." Seemanth later told STOI that he had instructed DCP (Crime) M Muthuraya to submit a report into the incident of police atrocities at the earliest.

When DSa said state government despite directives from SHRC had failed to take action against heads of police units in case of instances of moral policing, and drew attention of Nayak to a recent incident at Someshwar involving Bajrang Dal cadre, Nayak admonished Seemanth. "Crack down on any such troublemakers and do not allow them to sprout on our land, known for peace, and lest the secular fabric of the nation is torn into pieces," he said.

When leaders from SC/ST organizations prodded Nayak on slow pace of investigations in to murder of Goverdhan, a dalit cab driver, and alleged that police were slow in dealing with instances of murder of Dalits, Nayak remarked: "Such apathy does not augur well for any policing unit, especially since it deals with marginalized sections of society." He asked the SP to keep tabs on his officers who harassed innocents and coerced confessions out of them.

PFI, SDPI will be banned; party hopper MLAs who joined BJP will be awarded: K S Eshwarappa

Mysuru, Jan 19: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchyat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa on Sunday claimed that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India have been indulging in anti-national activities.

Talking to media persons here, he said the government is mulling to ban and take action against PFI and its political arm SDPI.

It was recommended even during the previous government, but it was not taken seriously, he added.

He said that the BJP will ensure that all the MLAs who were instrumental in the party coming to power (the then-disqualified MLAs who joined BJP from Congress and JDS recently and won the bypoll subsequently) will not be let down and be given suitable posts in the government.

Daily movement of workers between Kasaragod and Mangaluru stopped again

Mangaluru, Jul 7: The government of Kerala has barred movement of daily pass holders — professionals and workers — between Kasaragod district and Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district following a spurt in COVID-19 cases.

Kerala Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekaran announced the decision at a meeting on Monday in Kasaragod. Both district administrations had in June issued passes to daily travellers in their districts to travel in connection with their work.

Those from Dakshina Kannada intending to work in Kasaragod have to remain in Kasaragod for 28 days if they wish to continue and those from Kasaragod would have to remain in Dakshina Kannada for 28 days if they wish to continue their work, the Minister said.

Thousands from Kasaragod travel daily to Mangaluru and surrounding areas in connection with their work. Their travel past Talapady check post on NH 66 was facilitated by daily e-passes.

Similarly, many from Dakshina Kannada, particularly doctors and healthcare workers, travel daily to Kasaragod with daily e-passes issued by the Kasaragod administration.

First Dubai-Mangaluru evacuation flight to bring back 177 stranded people

Mangaluru, May 11: The first evocation flight from Dubai to Mangaluru amidst corona crisis is expected to bring back 177 stranded Kannadigas, mainly residents of coastal Karnataka, on Tuesday, May 12.

All the international passengers have to undergo three mandatory upon their arrival at Mangaluru International Airport - the thermal test, pulse oximetry reading and swab test.

They will be categorised based on their health condition and sent to institutional quarantine, said Sindhu B Rupesh, deputy commissioner, Dakshina Kannada.

“Those with some health issues on arrival (Category A) will be ferried through ambulances to quarantine facilities and rest in buses,” she said.

Arriving passengers will be given the option to choose their quarantine home (lodge, hostel and service apartment) based on their budget and preference.

It is learnt that Dakshina Kannada district administration has kept ready close to 1,000 rooms. The tariff for quarantine facilities is between Rs 1,200 and Rs 4,500 (including food) per day.

As per the Karnataka government, as on May 6, about 10,823 stranded expatriates are expected to return home.

The CISF, airport authorities, health and police departments will make arrangements for the arriving repatriates at MIA.

Sindhu said that the district administration has no personal information about the arriving passengers and there is high probability that they may belong to other districts or the neighbouring Kerala.

“So far, the district administration has received the missive that 177 passengers will be landing on May 12. If we are given advance details about the expats from other districts/state, the district administration will alert them to make necessary arrangements,” she said.
