Rights panel chief suggests Hadiya to take the battle to SC

Mangalore, September 24: Karnataka State Human Rights Commission Chairperson S R Nayak on Saturday suggested to embark on a legal battle over the 'scarf issues' often being reported from different educational institutions of the state and country, where Muslim girls were not allowed to wear head scarf.

Reacting to the case of Hadiya Iqbal, a second year student of Jain PU College, Moodbidri, who was forced to discontinue her studies as she is not allowed to cover her head with the dupatta of her uniform, Nadoja Nayak said such issues were a matter of concern.

Hadiya gave a written complaint against the college management to Mr Nayak at the public grievance meeting organised at the Auditorium of DC office, here.

The college management has not permitted Hadiya to attend classes using the uniform shawl as head scarf (hijab) and she is not attending classes since more than two months now.

Advising Ms Hadiya to take her case before the constitutional bench of Supreme Court, Mr Nayak opined it was one of the easy ways to find a permanent solution to the scarf issue in education institutions of the country.

Pledging all possible support to the girl through his panel, he also asked her to submit a detailed report about her problem.

Mangaluru, Jul 22: On the direction of the Karnataka government, private medical colleges in Dakshina Kannada have reserved 4,000 beds for the treatment of Covid-19 infected patients.

With this, the district will have a total of 4,720 beds for the treatment including that from the government set up.

The district administration has directed the eight private medical colleges to reserve 50 of its beds for treating the infected patients. Accepting the direction of the district administration, the management of medical colleges have submitted details on the beds reserved to the authorities concerned.

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief DK Shivakumar on Sunday said that Congress is a secular party and they clearly do not want any third candidate from BJP to win the Rajya Sabha elections.

Speaking to news agency, Shivakumar said, "We are a secular party. We are very clear that we don't want any BJP third candidate to win the Rajya Sabha election. My leader, Sonia Gandhi will take a call on it."
"My party leaders have taken a call on HD Devegowda Ji, very soon they will come with an announcement," he added.

Shivakumar had on Saturday said that the party has decided to field one candidate for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

He said the party would soon take a decision on the issue of support to former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda's candidature to the Upper House.
The elections to fill the vacant 18 Rajya Sabha seats from seven states will be held on June 19.

Kasaragod, Apr 1: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday announced a special action plan for Kasargod district where more people testing positive to the Coronovirous.

"The northern most district of the State has become the hot bed of Coronavirus infection with the maximum number of positive cases confirmed in Kerala," the Chief Minister told a press conference at the Government Secretariat.

“A special action plan will be implemented in Kasargod. Currently, Kasargod district has the maximum number of positive cases and also the highest number of people under hospital observation. Data from the panchayats in the district will be used to test people with symptoms and also to identify people in contact with them," he said.
