Road safety awareness programme held

Udupi, September 25: Lions Club Udupi, in association with Auto Operators Credit Co-operative Society, organized a road safety awareness programme at Lions Bhavan, here.

On the occasion, Lions Club, Udupi, distributed group insurance policies, under the Janatha Personal Accident Insurance scheme of New India Assurance to over 100 auto rickshaw drivers from Fish market rickshaw stand and Diana Theater stand.

In his inaugural address Lions Dictrict Governor, 324-D4, Jayakar Shetty Indrali said that road accidents could be reduced to half if the drivers follow the traffic rules properly.

Resident of Lions Club Udupi Indu Ramananda Bhat presided over the programme. Regional Transport Inspector Ravishankar said that in India, on an average, three lakh road accidents had been reported every year. Over 1 lakh people die in the accidents and over 3 lakh people get wounded.

Ravishankar said that the governments lack programms or even funds to prevent accidents. “We should have pothole free better and motorable roads. Street lights and ambulances service systems must strengthened”, he said.

Lions District Coordinator Sridhara Shenava, Lions Regional Chairman Dinesh Bangera, President of Auto Rickshaw Operators Credit Co-operative Society President Shantharam Salvankar, its Secretary Sridhar, Secretary of Lions Club Udupi CS Rao, group insurance coordinator Jagadish Shetty, road safety coordinator Nandakishore and others were present.

Mangaluru, Jun 16: Dakshina Kannada today reported 79 fresh covid-19 cases, taking the total infections in the coastal district to 370.

Out of the 79 positive cases, 75 persons had returned from Saudi Arabia. All of them have been shifted to the designated COVID hospital in Mangaluru for treatment.

As many as 11 persons today discharged from the hospital taking the total number of discharges to 145. There are 217 active cases in the district. 

Udupi district today reported 7 new covid cases taking the total to 1035. Among them 817 have discharged from the hospitals including today’s 81. The number of active cases is 217.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: The Opposition leader in the Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Wednesday strongly urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to desist from invoking amendment to the Land Reforms Act, saying it would make buying land easier for the corporate companies and the rich.

In a hard-hitting letter to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was released to the media, the Congress leader had urged to rescind the decision from amending to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and also Agriculture Produces Marketing Committee Act.

Asserting that the state government's move was only intending to help to the land grabbers, Siddaramaiah, also the former chief minister, said easing of restrictions to buy land to the tune of over 216 acres per individual would sound a death knell to the farm sector.

In the wake of the bomb found at Mangalore Airport on Monday morning, the team visited the railway station as a precautionary measure.
