Mangalore, September 27: If everything goes as per the plan, then Tree parks will come up at Pilikula in Dakshina Kannada and 80-Badagubettu in Udupi district.

Sources in the Forest department in Mangalore said “the tree park will be a joint venture of the Forest department and Pilikula Nisargadhama. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 1.5 crore. The proposal has already been submitted to the State government.”

“The objective is to develop parks on the lines of Bangalore's Lalbagh in each district, which will not only be places for people's amusement but will also help maintain the ecological balance,” said officials.

The Tree Park which will be developed in Pilikula will have 'Ashoka vana,' 'Bamboo vana,' 'Pauranika vana,' 'Scientific park' and 'Medicinal park.' It will come up in 100 acre land in Pilikula.

The official said “green fencing will be laid for seven kilometer as a part of the proposed project. The department is planning to grow 10,000 to 15,000 trees in the Tree Park. A sum of Rs 20 lakh has been earmarked for digging water percolation ponds, Rs six lakh for taking up soil conservation projects, Rs 15 lakh for water facilities and developing a nursery, Rs 60 lakh for laying paragola, children's park, digging a pond, creating pathway, drinking water facilities and toilets.

Five unique parks will be developed at the cost of Rs 15 lakh. A sum of other Rs 15 lakh will be earmarked for lightings, employing sweepers, cleaners and laying dustbins, and Rs six lakh will be utilised for the setting up of a theme park, which will provide details on the need for creating environmental awareness, need for parks, trees and the unique feature of the Tree Park etc.”

The tree park will have medicinal plants and saplings of 'Athi,' 'Arali,' 'Ashwatha,' 'Palasha'.

In Udupi

As the government wants to set up Tree Park in all the districts, the forest department in Udupi has identified land at 80-Badagubettu for the setting up of the Park.

Kundapur Division ACF Manjunath Shetty said: “The Government wants to create proper infrastructure in these parks to attract visitors and make them aware of the importance of conservation of forest.”

Tree park project is envisioned under the model of Lalbagh in Bangalore. The project is in its planning stage in Udupi and will be implemented on Public Private Partnership. About 117 hectare will be used for laying Tree Park. As the project is in its initial stage, only about 25 hectares of land will be covered with seedlings of local species like wild jack, 'Ashoka,' 'Renjala,' 'Amla,' 'Billerica.' All these seedlings are grown block wise separately with the idea of merging all together under a tree park. Besides, saplings of 'Honne,' 'Honge,' and 'Dupa' used for oil extraction will also be grown to support the concept of Bio-fuel Park, Shetty informed.

Bengaluru, Jun 29: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along with Congress leaders on Monday rode a bicycle from his residence to Minsk Square to protest against the hike in fuel prices.

KPCC President DK Shivakumar was also seen riding a bicycle along with other members of the Congress party to Minsk Square where the party staged the protest.

During the protest, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar along with party leaders carried a bike on their shoulders.

"We are carrying out our duty today. At the time of the UPA government's rule, when there was any hike in fuel prices, several BJP leaders had made bold statements. It is ironic that today, at the time of this COVID-19 pandemic, even despite the price of barrels falling, they have increased fuel prices," said Shivakumar.

"In Delhi, diesel prices have exceeded petrol prices. We must protest against this. The DCP can file whatever case he wants to. Despite several cases against us, we have never been shaken up. They are inconveniencing people and causing the people to burn in hell. These people must be protected," he added.

With the hike in fuel prices, the petrol prices stand at Rs 83.04/litre (increase by Rs 0.05), and the diesel prices stand at Rs 76.58/litre (increase by Rs 0.13) in Bengaluru, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

The Congress has termed the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel as "unjust" and "thoughtless", and urged the Central government to roll back the increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the people.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: Swift and strict action by the District Administration has resulted in the district achieving ‘Clean’ week with no new cases of COVID-19 reported for the seventh day in a row.

Meanwhile, in a happy coincidence, the district’s only infant allegedly affected – a ten month old child – was totally cured and discharged from the hospital along with infant’s mother and grandmother who were considered to the primary contacts. They are never tested positive for the virus, it is reported. Health experts attributed this to their natural immunity.

The child is said to have contracted the infection during a family visit to Kasargod, which has turned in to a Covid-19 hot spot. The family which hails from Sajipanadu in Bantwal-taluk had been kept in isolation ever since the child had tested positive on March 25. The quarantine was extended to the entire village as a preventive measure and the District Administration undertook the responsibility to providing essential supplies.

Newsroom, Apr 22: Dozens of Tablighi Jamaat members from across the country who have been successfully recovered and have now tested negative for the novel coronavirus have come forward and donate their plasma for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

The Tablighis from Tamil Nadu were the first to take this decision. According to them, apart from helping the critically ill patients to recover from COVID-19, was to counter the ‘baseless accusations’ that Tablighis were responsible for the spread of the virus following the religious congregation of the sect held at Delhi’s Nizamuddin area last month.

Mohammad Abbas, a thirty-eight year old businessman from Tiruppur was on Sunday discharged from Coimbatore’s ESI hospital. “As soon as I got discharged, I met the district administration officials and the dean of the hospital and told them that they may contact me anytime if they needed me to donate my plasma,” Abbas was quoted as saying by an English daily.

“It has only been one day since I was discharged but I’ve already spoken to others (from the Jamaat) who have recovered and they were all ready to donate,” he added.

Leader's call

Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, a prominent leader of Tablighi Jamaat, who has been booked by the Delhi Police for holding a religious congregation, too has appealed to coronavirus survivors to donate blood plasma for infected people.

In a letter issued on Tuesday, Saad said most of the members who were quarantined did not have any infection and they tested negative for COVID-19.

"Even from amongst the ones who tested positive for the disease, a majority of them have now undergone treatment and are now cured while I and a few others are still under quarantine.

"It is required that such people who are now cured of this disease should donate blood plasma to others who are still fighting the disease and are under treatment," he said.

He also has urged the followers of the organisation to pray at home in the month of Ramadan instead of going to mosques.

Plasma therapy

Convalescent Plasma Therapy is an experimental procedure for COVID-19 patients.

In this therapy, the antibodies of a person who has recovered from the virus are taken and transfused into a sick person (having the virus) to help boost the person’s immune system.

The recovered COVID-19 patient’s blood develops antibodies to battle against COVID-19.

Once the blood of the first patient is infused to the second patient, those antibodies will start fighting against the coronavirus in the second person.

The process for donating plasma is similar to donating blood and takes about an hour.

Several countries around the world including the United Kingdom and the United States have also started plasma therapy trials.

In India, several states like Kerala, Gujarat and Punjab have already started using Plasma Therapy for the corona-infected patients.
