World Tourism Day celebrated in city

Mangalore, September 27: Special programmes were organised in the city to mark the World Tourism Day on Tuesday.

IGP (Western Range) Alok Mohan and Airport Director M R Vasudeva and office-bearers of Mangalore Association of Travel Agents (MATA) welcomed the air passengers who landed at Mangalore Airport by presenting them roses.

Later in the evening a similar programme was organised by the District Administration, Tourism Department in association with Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project and Mangalore Association of Travel Agents (MATA) at City Centre Mall, K S Rao Road here.

Inaugurating the programme, N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker of State Legislative Assembly said that the state government is committed to develop the tourism destinations in coastal Karnataka. Many projects which would help the district to become major tourists' hub would be completed within couple of years, he promised.

Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangalore MLA U T Khader, Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project CEO Yathish Baikampady were present.

As part of the programme treasure hunt and other cultural activities were organised.

Mangaluru, Jun 15: A father and his four-year-old son were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a lorry from behind at Bakampady junction on the outskirts of the city.

The Police said the deceased has been identified as Abdul Bhasheer, a resident of Krishnapura and his son Shayan. 

On Sunday evening, Bahseer was going from Mangaluru to Krishnapura by the motorcycle along with wife and son when a speeding lorry "dashed into the motorcycle from behind and knocked them down''.

The four-year-old son died on the spot while Basher and his wife were rushed to the hospital. However, the husband succumbed to injuries at the hospital on Monday. Local police registered a case in this connection.

Bengaluru, Feb 26: The police remand of student activist Amulya Leona Noronha, who was produced before a Magistrate, after a no-show at the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, was extended by 10 more days.

The Fifth Additional Metropolitan Magistrate at the Magistrate's home on Tuesday night had remanded her to police custody for 10 days, less than the 14 days asked for by the Special Investigative Team, considering that she has already spent over four days in judicial custody.

Amulya Noronha, a student of NMKRV College for Women, had raised pro-Pakistan slogans by shouting ''Pakistan Zindabad'' at an anti-CAA protest in Bangalore on 20th February following which the city police filed a case of sedition against her.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: After fake sanitisers and masks, Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have busted another racket and seized fake thermometers worth Rs 8 lakh, it said in a statement on Wednesday.

Based on credible information, police conducted the raid on Prajval Surgical and Scientific store located on the first floor of a commercial building in the first block, Rajajinagar. They arrested store manager Keshavan N, 32, a resident of Kurubarahalli.

The police have seized 70 fake infrared forehead thermometers and 60 batteries used in these thermometers. They were worth around Rs 8 lakh as per the price they charged customers for each thermometer.
