CRZ rules obstacle to explore tourism potential'

Udupi, September 28: ''Coastal districts offer ample avenues to develop tourism sector especially beach tourism,'' said MLA Raghupathy Bhat.

He was speaking after inaugurating the World Tourism Day-2011 celebrations organised with the concept of “Tourism Linking Cultures” by District Administration and District Tourism Department here on Tuesday. He said earlier governments would offer meager amount of funds to develop tourism as compared to the funds allotted these days. As many as Rs 187 crore budget has been envisioned to promote tourism during the current fiscal year. In this backdrop, the most essential issue to be taken into consideration is the relaxation of CRZ rules. It is the major obstacle towards exploiting available beach tourism potentials.

Industrialists are not coming forward owing to the CRZ rules. It has been designed unscientifically, he added.Bhat said at least CRZ norms should be relaxed at State-level. It should be reduced to 200 meters, he opined and added that beach tourism should be developed in the model adopted by the governments of Kerala and Goa.

State government has allotted Rs 2 crore to upgrade the harbours at Malpe and St Mary's island. Experts' reports on plans deciding over setting up of floating harbor or permanent harbor at St Mary's island is expected within a week.

The foundation stone laying ceremony for Madhwacharya statue built at the cost of Rs 3 crore at Malpe beach is performed and the work is expected to get over shortly. The Suralu Palace is renovated at the cost of Rs 1.60 crore.

The actual amount needed to get the palace entirely renovated is around Rs 10 crore.

However, we have managed to repair the palace with available sum of money. A task force committee for developing tourism in the district involving private parties is the need of hour. The DC should head the task force committee, he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 24: Underlining the seriousness of the coronavirus, which is spreading like wildfire in Karnataka, renowned Heart Surgeon and founder of Narayana Hrudayalaya Dr Devi Shetty on Tuesday predicted that Karnataka alone will have more than 80,000 people affected with the dreaded killer disease COVID-19 if people fail to protect themselves.

He urged the people to cooperate with the Government in preventing its further spread and immediately treat those who are affected.

Dr Shetty, urging the people to remain indoors and not to venture out, said those who are affected should not come out and remain in isolation even in their houses and take all precautions advised by doctors.

He said if 80,000 people in the state were affected, more than 20,000 need to be admitted to Hospital for treatment.

"More than 2000 affected need to be kept under ventilation and it requires more infrastructure in the hospitals," he said.

Mysuru, Feb 26: The Pre-University Education Department was taking several measures to prevent paper leaks during the II PU examinations, scheduled to commence from March 4, a statement said on Tuesday.

Among the few measures that the board has chalked out, students would not be allowed to leave the examination hall till the last bell. In case of any emergency, the student could leave the exam hall but s/he would be required to surrender the question paper to authorities in the hall.

This is being done to ensure question papers aren’t circulated during exam hours by those who exit the hall before the last bell.

Bengaluru, May 17: Karnataka Government on Sunday decided to appoint Administrative Committees, to over 6000 Panchayat Bodies, in the state, who’s five-year term would comes to an end this month.

Speaking to the media here, the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Minister, K S Eshwarappa informed that the state cabinet met recently had favored to appoint committees which would replace the elected bodies.

Informing that there is provision in the Panchayath Raj Act to appoint the committees, he said that the concerned Deputy Commissioners of the district, would appoint the members, to the committee, who were eligible to be nominated to the committees.
