Scholar gives a pep talk to Arabic teachers

October 1, 2011

Mangalore, October 1: Learning a language is a skill, which can be cultivated only through constant practice and not by formulas, said renowned Islamic scholar Dr V Abdul Rahim.

He was delivering a talk on 'Teaching the Language of Glorious Qur'an' organised by Unity Ilm Centre for the Arabic teachers recently at IMA Hall here.

Dr Abdul Rahim, who is the Director of Qur'an Translation Centre at the King Fahd Qur'an Printing Complex in Madinah, exhorted the Arabic teachers participated in the programme to try their best to communicate with students in grammatically perfect Arabic.

“From the very first lesson and from the day-one, you should start speaking Arabic and encourage the students. In language classes, the students have to work more” he said.

He said some people may argue that it is not necessary to learn Arabic, as various translations of the Qur'an are easily available in the markets. “They must understand that translations cannot replace the original Qur'an and there are no substitute for Qur'anic words and verses in any language on the face of earth”, he said.

Translations of Quran can only convey some of meanings of Qur'anic verses to the reader or listener, he said adding that many Qur'anic words defy translation.

Expressing distress over the lack of interest in learning the language of Qur'an in non-Arabic countries, he said although Arabic is a living language, unfortunately, it is approached as if it is a dead language. “Both teachers and students hesitate to use Arabic as a vehicle of communication”, he said.

Laying emphasis on the importance of grammar, he said without grammar one cannot learn any language. However, he said, grammar should be taught according to the student's need.

“In most of the non-Arabic countries including India and Pakistan, the problem with Arabic teaching is that, the whole grammar is taught in the beginning itself without any application. Through this method, it is very difficult for a student to learn Arabic as the examples used in this method are too old-fashioned. We need to teach diction which is used today”, he suggested.

Due to the unscientific and methods of teaching and learning, the Arabic language has suffered a lot at the hands of teachers, books, syllabus and students, he lamented.

Dr Abdul Rahim also said that books written for the native speakers of Arabic, are not suitable for students of non Arabic countries.

Dr C P Habeeb Rahman, Chairman, Unity Health Complex, presided over the programme. Renowned surgeon Dr Mohammed Ismail was also present among others.

Bengaluru, May 23: It was a stampede-like situation near Palace Grounds in Bengaluru on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place after hundreds of migrants gathered and jostled to gain entry. The situation raises concerns as no social distancing norms were followed.

According to Chetan Singh Rathore, DCP Central, the reason behind the stampede-like situation was an en masse message. "What we heard was that an en masse message has been conveyed to the people of Manipur and Odisha that they would be able to go home on trains on Saturday. The message did not consider the capacity of the train which is only 1500 seating capacity for Manipur train and 1500 for Odisha train," he told media.

Singh further added, "But the people gathered were around 3000 in number for the Manipur train and 5000 for the Odisha train. Passengers with tickets and requisites were allowed to travel while others were asked to return home and wait for their turn to travel back home."

The state of Karnataka has eased lockdown restrictions across, allowing state transport services to run. Lately, the government has been running special Shramik trains from Karnataka to ferry migrant workers back to their hometowns.

Bengaluru, May 18: Over two months after his appointment as the Karnataka Congress President, DK Shivakumar is likely to take-over the reigns of the party officially on May 31.

"There are two dates, May 31 and June 7. He is most likely to officially take over as KPCC President on the 31st," sources close to Mr Shivakumar told PTI.

After remaining in a virtual vacuum for nearly three months, the party high command on March 11 appointed Mr Shivakumar, known to be the Congress' chief troubleshooter in crisis situations, replacing Dinesh Gundu Rao as KPCC chief.

Mr Rao had quit the post in December 2019 after the party's dismal show in the bypolls when it won only two of the 15 seats and yielded 12.

Congress sources said once the appointment letter came from the high command, he has been KPCC president and officially taking charge was just a formality.

"He will be officially handed over the party insignias and responsibilities relating to bank accounts and cheques, among other things, that has been traditionally followed," they said, adding the official take over was delayed by the coronavirus.

After his appointment as KPCC president, Mr Shivakumar has been meeting a host of senior party leaders and leading the party in the fight against coronavirus.

These include setting up of Congress' COVID-19 task force, alerting the government in its management of the crisis, holding weekly video conferencing with leaders of party's local units to gather information, among other things.

Sources close to Mr Shivakumar said the official take over would be a simple event, looking at the current situation due to the pandemic.

"Very few select party leaders and office bearers, say about 50 odd people, are likely to be in attendance at the simple event at KPCC office," they said, adding that arrangements may be made to telecast the event live for the benefit for party workers and local leaders.

A six-time MLA, Mr Shivakumar had a long wait for his appointment to the coveted post, due to opposition within. There were reports that Congress Legislature Party leader Siddarmaiah had lobbied in favour of one of his confidants for the top job.

In a first, appointment of three KPCC Working Presidents- Satish Jharkiholi, Saleem Ahammed and Eashwar Khandre, was seen as an attempt by those apposing Mr Shivakumar, to weaken his hold on the party.
