BJP workers in city celebrate Koppal by-poll victory

Mangalore, September 30: Workers of Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party celebrated their party's win in the Koppal Assembly by-polls.

As soon as the election results were announce on Thursday dozens of party works gathered outside the party office at Kodiyalbail in the city, burst crackers and distributed sweets.

The party continued to keep a clean slate in by-polls held in Karnataka after BJP government came to power in 2008.

Thursday's results also marks the maiden win in a by-poll after D V Sadananda Gowda, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP took over reigns of the state as the CM.

Udupi/Mangaluru, Mar 1: A total of twenty leaplings were born in the hospitals of the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada (DK) districts on Saturday, February 29, district health department said on Sunday.

According to the district health department, sixteen babies were born in DK district while Udupi district saw four births. More boys than girls were born in DK (12–4) and it was the inverse in Udupi district (3–1).

Mangaluru, May 10: A young photographer has drowned in River Phalguni near Maravoor on the outskirts of the city.

The victim has been identified as Kaushik, 22, who was working for Diya Studio in Kavoor. A resident of Kavoor, he was the only son of his mother.

The tragedy occurred when he had been to the river along with four friends to collect freshwater snails.

It is learnt that local residents rushed to the spot when Kaushik’s friends raised alarm. However, they could not rescue him.

Kaushik’s body was retrieved from the water after sometime. A case has been registered at Kavoor police station.

Chikkamagaluru, Mar 8: A 20 member armed gang barged into a farmhouse at Gudde Thota near Jayapura in Koppa taluk and looted valuables and cash worth about Rs 12 lakh after assaulting the inmates, Police said on Sunday.

According to police, the culprits covered their face with masks and after assaulting watchman they broke open the main door and tied up Vijayaraghav and his wife Asha before robbing the valuables.

The culprits took away Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and valuables worth over Rs 10 lakh.
