Preservers of endangered species trees to get incentives

Mangalore, October 1: In a move to make people involve in conserving bio-diversity, the Karnataka Biodiversity Board in a recent meeting has decided to provide special incentives from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 to those who protected trees belonging to endangered species, revealed District in-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar.

He was speaking at the inaugural of wild life week celebration at Dr Shivarama Karanth Biological Park at Pilikula on Saturday.

Mr Palemar, who is also the Minister for Environment and Ecology and head of the Board, said that the State Government has committed to preserve the trees which are on the verge of extinction.

Speaking on the occasion, H J Jayaprakash Bhandary, Director of the Park, said that Rs 43 lakh fund approved by the State government for the extension activities of the Park would be utilised for building enclosures for water birds, snakes apart from other development activities.

He said the park is in the process of acquiring pairs of hippopotamus and bison's from the Mysore zoo at the earliest. "The enclosures for these animals are ready," he added.

Ananth Hegde Ashisara, Chairman, Task Force on Western Ghats and Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda were also present.

A rest house built by Karnataka Bank at the park was inaugurated on the occasion. An exhibition of wild photography was also organised.

Jan 21: Info Edge (India)'s shareholding in Zomato reduces to 22.71%; Uber receives 9.99% stake in Zomato.

Info Edge (India) announced that Zomato Media (Zomato) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Uber's food delivery business in India (Uber) in an all-stock transaction, which gives Uber 9.99% ownership in Zomato.

Uber Eats in India will discontinue operations and direct restaurants, delivery partners, and users of the Uber Eats apps to the Zomato platform, effective 21 January 2020.

Upon closing of said acquisition, the company's shareholding in Zomato shall stand reduced to about 22. 71 % on fully converted & diluted basis.

Udupi, Apr 9: Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesha said that criminal cases would be booked against owners of houses and sheds who were collecting rent from those, including workers, staying in rented houses.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Mr Jagadeesha said that to prevent the spread of COVID-19, restrictions had been imposed throughout the district under Section 144 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The administration had through an earlier order made it clear that house owners and shed owners should not collect rent from their tenants and workers for March and April.

But the administration had received complaints that some house owners and shed owners were collecting rent despite the order.

Bengaluru, Feb 11: Onion price dropped to Rs 25-30 per kg on Monday, down from the dizzying Rs 200/kg in December and January. The price had spiked because of excess rain, which ruined the crop in several parts of the country.

With supply stabilising, especially from Maharashtra and northern Karnataka, and exports banned, the rate is now easing, officials said.

Consumers may be smiling but farmers are worried as they are not able to make more than Rs 17/kg as against the expected Rs 40.

"We get onions from Nasik and Sholapur in Maharashtra. Nasik onions used to be exported but since that is currently banned, they are landing in Bengaluru, leaving the market here with a surplus," said K Lokesh, president, Karnataka State Onion Merchants Association.

A farmer from Sholapur wh o was part of a onion growers' delegation which met traders in Bengaluru, said, "The cost of everything has gone up. Labour charges and fuel prices are draining us. How can we survive? How can I pay for my children's education?"

Another Sholapur farmer rued: "My daughter's wedding is in March. How am I going to meet all the expenses? I have to pay for labour, transportation, gunny bags and when everything adds up, I don't get to save more than Rs 30,000 in a month."
