Green belt to be created on sea shore to check erosion'

Mangalore, October 2: Western Ghats Task Force Chairman Ananth Hegde Ashisara insisted on the inclusion of biodiversity component to in prevention of sea erosion project planned along Ullal.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said green belt will be created on the sea shore to check sea erosion by raising casurina plantations all along the backshore. The Casurina belts acts as a green wall to control erosion both by sea and wind. The pilot project which will be taken up to check sea erosion should include the components of environment and bio diversity. A discussion will be held with the officials concerned. There is a need to involve fishermen and the locals in the initiative.


Mr Ashisara also said that with a view to protect jackfruit varieties, 400 saplings of 26 varieties of jack fruits have been planted in the premises of Forest Research Centre in Sirsi.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said 26 varieties were collected from 120 villages of Malnad region. Another 2,000 saplings are getting ready. All the nursery of the forest department should create saplings of the jackfruit to be grown in the forest.

There is a need to promote jackfruit as a major fruit. Efforts are on to collect varieties of Midimaavu in the region, he added.

Hegde said, under Hasiru Kavacha scheme, planting activities has been carried out in 37 hectare in Kundapur forest division. One lakh lavancha and 17,000 Honne saplings have been planted. In Mangalore forest division, saplings have been planted besides the road for 13 kilometres adjacent to the sea. About 1.25 lakh lavancha saplings has been planted for seven kilometre stretch. As many as 12,750 Honne saplings have been planted. Tree Parks would come up at Pilikula in Dakshina Kannada and Badagubettu in Udupi. As part of the Hasiru Kavacha yojane, planting of saplings has commenced along the shore at Mogaveerapattana on Saturday, he added.


He said Devarakadu has been identified at Karanjeshwara in Bantwal and Panja in Sullia and measures have been taken to protect them. The state has 23 Medicinal Plants Conservation Area wherein measures have been taken to conserve the endemic medicinal plants.

There are 95 Forest Committees in Mangalore and Kundapur forest division, Hegde added.

The Task Force will organise cultural programmes including yakshagana and Tulu drama to create awareness on environment and bio-diversity among the people.

Dubai, Mar 3: Abu Dhabi-based Indian retail tycoon MA Yusuff Ali has become the first Indian to receive Saudi Arabia's premium residency, his office said in a statement on Monday.

Yusuff Ali, 64, is the chairman of the LuLu Group, who was ranked the richest expat in the UAE by the Forbes magazine last year.

The permit, informally known as Saudi Green Card, grants expatriates the right to live, work and own business and property in the Kingdom without need for a sponsor, the LULU group said in a statement.

The introduction of the Premium Residency comes as a part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 reform plan, which was announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to boost the Saudi economy, the statement said.

Yusuff Ali said "obviously a very proud and humbling moment in my life. This is a great honour not only for me but for the entire Indian expat community and I sincerely thank the HM the King Salman, HRH Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman and the government of Saudi Arabia."

Yusuff Ali said he was sure that this new permanent residency initiative will further boost Saudi Arabia's image as one of the key investments and business hubs of the region as well as attract and retain new investors.

This initiative is targeting key investors and prominent personalities from various fields, including sports, arts & culture, who have played a defining role in the nation building process.

The Lulu Group owns and operates more than 35 hypermarkets and supermarkets in Saudi Arabia, which includes ARAMCO Commissaries and National Guards super stores.

Kolkatta, Mar 19: A local leader of BJP has been arrested for organising a cow urine consumption event in Kolkata, claiming that it will protect people from coronavirus or cure those already infected, leading to a civic volunteer falling ill after drinking it.

The police said that 40-year-old Narayan Chatterjee, who had on Monday organised a cow worship programme at a cowshed and distributed cow urine, was arrested following a complaint filed by the victim.

He had vouched for its "miraculous" properties while offering gaumutra to others.

A civic volunteer, who was on duty near the cow shed also consumed gaumutra and fell sick on Tuesday, following which he lodged a complaint with the police against Chatterjee.

Reacting to the arrest, the state BJP leadership criticised the state government.

"Chatterjee had distributed cow urine, but he didn't fool people in consuming it. When he distributed it he clearly said it was cow urine, he didn't force anyone to drink it. It has not been proved whether it is harmful or not.

"So how can just police arrest him without any reason. This is completely undemocratic," state BJP General Secretary Sayantan Basu said.

West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh has said there is no harm in drinking cow urine and he has no qualms in admitting he consumes it.

His party colleague and MP Locket Chatterjee, however, differed, terming it an "unscientific belief" that should be shunned.

The cow urine distribution as a cure for coronavirus had drawn sharp criticism from the doctors.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: KPCC president D K Shivakumar, has alleged that BJP leaders from the state have sold rice that was meant to be distributed to the poor in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to newsmen here on Friday, he stated that Congress fully supports the government’s work in the prevention of the spread of COVID-19, but maybe unknown to the Chief Minister, corrupt dealings are which we want to bring to his attention.

He alleged that 1,879 quintals of rice brought from Haryana have been illegally sold to a businessman in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
