Mangalore pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 142nd birth anniversary

Mangalore, October 2: The coastal city on Sunday paid homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 142nd birth anniversary.

Political, religious and social leaders offered floral tributes to the statues and portraits of Gandhiji in different parts of the city with respect. Several functions have been organised in and around the city in Mahatma Gandhi's honour.

An anti-narcotics and corruption awareness march organised under the joint auspices of Mangalore City Corporation, Roteract Mangalore City unit, and National Service Scheme of Mangalore University as part of the Day.

District Information Officer Rohini K inaugurated the march at 8:30 am near PVS Circle. A large number of students took part in the march, which culminated in front of Mangalore City Corporation, where city Mayor Praveen Anchan garlanded the statue of Mahatma. Commissioner of civic body K Harish Kumar was also present.

In Mahatma Gandhi Foundation, industrialist A Sadanada Shetty presided over the programme. Writer Rohini delivered a talk on the significance of the Day.

As part of the celebration, the Bharath Seva Dal felicitated freedom fighter Dr Ammmembala Balappa after flag hoisting in front of the Town Hall.

Elected representatives and senior officials presented him with a khadi shawl and a Gandhi cap after about 100 children, all Seva Dal volunteers, rendered 'Vande Mataram'. The guests were also given Gandhi caps as a memento.


The New Mangalore Port Trust too celebrated the Gandhi Jayanthi. In a function organised at the Port Trust Hospital, Dr. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman has garlanded the portrait of Mahathma followed by T SN Murthy, Deputy Chairman, HODs, Senior Officers of the Port and Trade Union leaders.

As a part of the function, fruits were distributed to the inpatients of the Port Trust Hospital

The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known as the 'Father of the Nation', is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 with reverence all over the country.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as 'Bapu', or Gandhiji, was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbander, Gujarat.

Gandhiji was a preacher of truth (Satyagraha) and 'ahimsa' (non-violence). He started the 'Satyagraha' movement for the Indian freedom struggle. He believed in living a simple life and in 'Swadeshi'.

He proved to the world that freedom can be achieved through the path of non-violence - a true symbol of peace and truth!

The United Nations had declared in 2007 that October 2 would be observed as 'International Day of Non-Violence'.

Mangaluru / Dammam, July 14: As many as 180 NRIs from Karnataka who were stranded in Saudi Arabia amid Covid 19 crisis today reached their home country by a flight charted by a Jubail based company KMT.

The Indigo flight carrying 174 adult passengers and 6 infants took off from King Fahad Airport, Dammam at 6:30 a.m. and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 1:30 p.m.

Pregnant women, people with serious ailments and those who lost jobs are among the passengers. KMT has provided free ticket for some of the passengers who were in dire need of support.

KMT is a company which is head quartered in Jubail, Saudi Arabia was formed by natives of Addoor, Dakshin Kannada -  Shoukath, Abdul Razaq, Siddique and Abdul Rahman.

The CEO of KMT, Mr. Abdul Razaq has thanked Dr. Arathi Krishna, former president of KNRI Forum for her support to KMT in chartering flight.

He has also has expressed his gratitude to D.K district administration, director of SACO  company Mr. Althaf Ullal and KMT operation Manager Mr. Sadiq Ahmed and his team for their cooperation.

Udupi, Jul 21: Udupi Court complex has been sealed down for two days for sanitisation after a judge tested positive for Covid-19, a source said on Tuesday.

The Covid cases in Udupi district which had reduced recently are once again seeing a spurt. On Monday, as many as 98 have tested positive taking the total cases in the district to 2,321.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Three legislators of the opposition Congress in Karnataka, including 2 MLAs and 1 MLC tested positive for coronavirus and are under treatment, a party official said on Saturday.

"Our Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalgi in Belagavi district and Humnabad MLA Rajashekhar Patil and his MLC brother Chandrashekhar Patil in Bidar district tested positive for the infection and are under treatment at designated hospitals," party spokesman Ravi Gowda told media persons in Bangaluru.

Koujalgi's swab sample was taken on Friday after he showed signs of illness and its result turned positive earlier in the day.

"As Koujalgi attended a review meeting at Bailhongal, about 20 officials who participated in the meeting have been home quarantined," said Gowda.

Koujalgi is the second lawmaker in the state's northwest region to test positive after BJP's Belagavi North assembly segment MLA Anik Benake tested positive for the virus on July 15.

"Patil brothers were in self quarantine after meeting BJP's Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, who tested positive on Wednesday. Their tests also showed they were infected with the virus," Gowda said.

Congress MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, who tested positive on Friday, is under treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru.

Dakshina Kannada district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai is in institutional quarantine in Bengaluru after he tested positive for the infection.
