Widows throng at Mangalore Dasara; return home with saree, kumkum, jasmine!

October 3, 2011

Mangalore, September 3: It was a historic day for Shri Gokarnatheshwara Temple in Kudroli, the showpiece of on-going Mangalore Dasara. Hundreds of widows, who are considered to be a curse in traditional Hindu society, on Monday, thronged the holy place to get a warm reception from temple authorities.

As a new addition to the second most popular Dasara of Karnataka, around 1,900 widows were presented with special gifts by the temple authorities. Each widow received a saree worth Rs 300, a small kumkum box, bangles, and jasmine flower - materials normally not part of her repertoire as per ancient religious traditions.

Padmaraj, Treasurer, of the Temple told 'coastaldigest.com' that sarees and flowers were distributed as 'prasadam' to widows present at the rituals held in the morning.

Although the Temple had planned to distribute 1500 sarees this year, more than 1900 widows took benefit of the special 'prasadam', he said adding that there were a large number of widows who could not get the sarees due to the shortage.

“The names of the ones who did not get this 'prasadam' were noted and coupons were issued and they can collect the same on October 12 from the Temple premises,” he informed.

Explaining about what made the Temple authorities to think of distributing sarees and kumkum to widows, he said: “It was noticed previously that widows never used to join hands to pull the silver chariot, as they are always considered untouchables in the society. This made us resolve to change the system of ill-treating widows, and with God's grace for the first time in the entire country, we could do this successfully”

Anandi and Leelavathi, the two elderly widows from a remote village in Dakshina Kannada, who were in queue of widows to register their name for saree distribution, expressed contentment over the Temple's gesture. “We feel good to visit the Temple and participate in puja” she added.

Mar 11: Two activists of Sangh Parivar have been arrested by the police in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore for hurling a petrol bomb at a mosque in Ganapathy on March 5.

The miscreants had hurled petrol bombs at the front gate of Hidayathul Sunnath Jamath Mosque at Vedhambal Nagar near Ganapathy in Coimbatore around 1 am on March 5. Since the bomb did not explode, nobody was injured in the incident.

Following a complaint from the Secretary of the Jama’ath, the police had formed three separate teams to nab the miscreants.

Based on tip-offs, the police detained BJP member Pandi (41) and VHP member Akhil (23), both from Rathnapuri in Coimbatore for inquiry.  The duo has also been remanded to judicial custody.

According to a statement by the Coimbatore police, the accused told the police that they hurled petrol bomb at the mosque to protest against the attack against Anand, a Hindu Munnani functionary a few days ago. The accused also reportedly told the police that they were planning to create more chaos.

Madukkarai Anand, the District Secretary of Hindu Munnani was attacked on March 4, while he was returning home after participating in a pro-CAA dharna organised by the BJP and allied parties in Gandhipuram.

He was allegedly followed by men on two motorbikes, who attacked him with rods. Anand suffered head injuries in the attack and was admitted to a hospital. The Podanur police registered a case for attempt to murder based on a complaint and had also formed special teams to nab the accused. However, no one has been apprehended in that case till now.

Based on the statements given by the accused, the police arrested the two men, seized the two-wheeler they used, two cell phones and the things they used to manufacture the petrol bomb.

Vijayapura, June 16: Even as a video of a man wearing a burqa who is being thrashed by locals is going viral on social media, netizens targeted Bharatiya Janata Party for their activist resorting to heinous acts.

The man who was caught in burqa has been identified as Siddu Paragond, an activist of Snagh Parivar hailing from Sindgi town in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district.

The bizarre incident took place in Sindgi on June 11 outside a bank.

“While people including women were standing in a queue outside the bank, the person in burqa was acting in a suspicious manner. The person was trying to get too close to women which was making them feel awkward,” local residents said.

“Getting suspicious, some locals tried to interact and their suspicion rose with the strange behaviour of the person. Suddenly some men took the person away from the bank and checked only to find that it was a man in burqa. The men thrashed him and handed him over to police,” the sources said.

Confirming this, Superintendent of Police Anupam Agrawal said that the Siddu Paragond has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. He, however, made it clear that no suspicious objects were found on Siddu. “We are trying to find out the motive for his act,” the SP said.
