First Hajj flight takes off from Mangalore with 159 pilgrims

Mangalore, October 4: The first Hajj flight from Mangalore Airport carrying pilgrims to Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, took off on Tuesday.

Mangalore Airport Director M R Vasudeva Rao said the international airliner KNE 46 6603, carrying 159 passengers departed the Mangalore Airport at 7: 53 pm.

Chairman of the State Haj Committee S Mohammed Ghouse Basha Ashrafi informed that the flight would take the pilgrims directly to Madinah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with a short stop in Ras al-Khaimah in the UAE for refuelling.

He said around 800 pilgrims would travel from here through the Haj committee in five separate batches this year.

He also said that second and third Hajj flights would fly from Mangalore on October 7 and 9 at 9:40 pm respectively, and fourth and fifth flights on October 10 and 11 at 10:05 pm respectively. Each flight would carry 160 passengers, he added.

Farewell

A farewell programme for the Hajj pilgrims was organised at the Old Terminal Building of the Mangalore Airport in the evening by State Hajj Committee.

Mangalore Qazi Thwaqa Ahmed Musliyar inaugurated the programme. Mulky-Moodbidri MLA Abhaychandra Jain, former minister BA Moideen, former police officer GA Bava and Principal Secretary to Government, Department of Minority Affairs Syed Zameer Pasha were present among others.

Mangaluru, Jul 1: The Bajpe police station under the limits of Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate has been sealed down after an arrested accused was tested positive for the Coronavirus.

Police said on Wednesday that the Bajpe police arrested two persons in connection with plotting dacoity in Oddidakala in Bajpe. After the arrest, their throat swab was sent for a test. On Wednesday, one of the accused tested positive for the Coronavirus.

In this connection, the Bajpe police station has been sealed down and the police personnel who were present during the arrest are placed under home quarantine.

Bengaluru, Mar 9: The BJP government in Karnataka on Monday scrapped the Shaadi Bhagya Scheme that was launched by Congress government in the state in 2013.

Under the scheme, Rs 50,000 was given to Muslim brides for marriage expenses after they submitted their Aadhar and BPL cards.

While the previous coalition government had allocated Rs 60 crore budget for the scheme, the BJP government decided to discontinue the scheme. Congress called the move by the state government as "anti-minority".

"They have launched a scheme for the majority community. I welcome that. But why are you discontinuing one scheme? It is a small scheme where marginalized people get a little help from the government," Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad told reporters.

"He (Karnataka Chief Minister) has wilfully reduced the money allotted to all the schemes," he added.

BJP MLA Basavana Gowda Patil Yantal welcomed the decision of the Karnataka Government to scrap the scheme.

"The minority does not need appeasement because equal citizenship needs to apply to all in this country. I wholeheartedly welcome this move by the Karnataka Government," Yantal told reporters.

"Should we not give the majority people anything in India? India not giving anything to the majority, is that secular? We have already given them Pakistan," he said.

The MLAs from the minority community in the state have demanded a meeting with the Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Udupi, Mar 25: A 34-year-old man who returned from Dubai tested positive for novel coronavirus in Udupi district. This is the first case in the district. 

He returned from Dubai on March 18 and got admitted to a government hospital in Udupi on March 23 for fever. The swab samples were sent to Shivamogga laboratory for testing.

The report which arrived on Wednesday confirmed that he was positive for COVID-19, said DHO Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda.
