Taxi driver murdered for money: Police

Mangalore, October 6: The Mangalore city police claimed to have solved the murder case of a city based taxi driver Govardhan after arresting two persons.

Addressing a press meet at his office on Thursday Commissioner of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh confirmed the arrest of Mahanthesh Honnappa Annegeri (26), son of Honnappa, hailing from Nandihalli near Hosa Neeralagi village in Savanur taluk of Haveri district, and residing near Peter's House at Kottara Chowki on the outskirts of the city and Somashekar (29), son of Kariyappa, from, Burudakatte village in Hosadurga taluk of Chitradurga district, and resident of Shivanna Compound in Vaamanjur.

Mr Singh said that the arrested have confessed that they have committed the crime for the sake of money as they were jobless. However, they did not have a criminal background, he said.

“It was just a 'murder of game'. No communal or political intention was behind this murder” he clarified.

Mr Singh said that more than thirty people were interrogated by the police to find out the real culprits.

Explaining the reason for delay in solving the case, Mr Singh said it was a challenging case, as there were no clues. Moreover, police did not want to arrest anyone without proper evidence.

The commissioner refused to reveal whether police had recovered anything from the accused.

The top cop of the city also urged the general public to take precautions and cooperate with police in serious cases like theft and murders.

It can be recalled that, Govardan, son of S Narayan, a resident of Bejai and a taxi owner-cum-driver by profession, was found murdered on August 29, four days after he went missing with his Indica car, bearing registration number KA 19-D-1578.

Mangaluru, May 23: Two more persons tested positive for covid-19 in Dakshina Kannada today taking the district's tally to 65.

One among them is a 30-year-old man who had returned from Maharashtra and was under quarantine. He underwent test at a private lab and was tested positive.

The other one is a 41-year-old woman who is a resident of Shirlalu in Beltangady and had symptoms of influenza-like illness. 

She was urged by residents in the surroundings of her house to go for a test. She was shifted to Wenlock COVID hospital in the morning on Saturday.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, the state's health department issued fresh guidelines for the disposal of bodies of COVID patients.

"Although an increased risk of COVID infection from a dead body to health workers or family members who follow standard precautions while handling the body is unlikely, the lack of scientific data requires the utmost care to avoid the inadvertent spread of COVID-19 during these times," the statement from the health department's press release read, emphasising on the dignity of the dead and the religious and cultural tradition.

The 23-page press release elaborated on guidelines regarding testing, handling of dead bodies and other specificities in relation to the management of COVID-19 bodies.

"Testing should not be insisted in every case of death, but only when they have a recorded history of influenza-like symptoms. The body should be handed over to the family members/ relatives in a dignified manner immediately after swab collection and hospitals should provide handouts with a list of dos and don'ts in English and Kannada laying down relevant information," the statement said.

It added, "At the mortuary, health care workers, mortuary staff and the family of the deceased body shall not come in direct contact with the dead body and must wear full personal protective equipment (PPE). If the family or relative are for any reason unable to cremate or bury the body, the local health authority shall arrange for the dignified last rites as per the religious traditions of the family."

Regarding autopsies (post mortem) on COVID-19 bodies, the state department said that they should be avoided, except in necessary circumstances.

The statement also gave detailed guidelines regarding the appropriate recording of COVID-19 deaths in line with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines.

Additionally, the health department made a statement about the admission procedure for COVID positive patients referred by other district administrations saying, "It is now mandatory for all the referrals from the BBMP admission and discharge of COVID positive patients to be done through the online COVID Hospital Bed Management System (CHBMS)."

The state's count of coronavirus cases was 1,51,449 in the past 24 hours.

So far, a total of 2,804 people have died due to COVID-19 in the state, while the average recovery rate in Karnataka is 49.3 per cent.

Bengaluru, Apr 22: Former Chief Minister and the Opposition Leader in the Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah appealed the state government not to discriminate the poor on political lines while distributing relief package to the COVID-19 affected people in the state.

He was speaking to newsmen after attending a grocery kits distribution programme, organised in Jayanagar Assembly constituency, which was represented by the Congress MLA and former minister Ramalinga Reddy.

Charging that there are complaints about the state government in discriminating the Congress MLAs represented constituencies in providing relief kits to distribute among the poorer sections in the society, he said that “there should not be no room for politics, while fighting the COVID-19 disease”.
