Mangalore, October 8: Commuters between Bangalore and Mangalore can travel comfortably after six months as the much awaited 4-lane project on NH-48 is likely to be completed by April 2012.
Sources said the stretch between Nelamangala and Bellur cross has been completed and work between Bellur cross and Hassan is on a war footing.
Larsen and Toubro official said in Hassan that the company had decided to complete the project in six months. The company has set up its stone crushing and tar mixing plants near Udayapura to expedite work on the 59 km stretch road between Hiresave and Hassan.
The construction of over 35 bridges between Channayapatna and Nelamangala had already been completed for the road widening, sources said.
More than 250 trees on either side of the road between Hassan and Kunigal have been felled for the purpose, sources added.
Interestingly, the prices of land on either side of NH-48 have gone up in Channarayapatna and Hassan taluks as real estate owners have been purchasing at exorbitant prices.
The 185km stretch between Hassan and Bangalore would be reduced to 165km as L&T had removed many curves and constructed bypass roads as per the direction of the NH authorities.
The journey time between Hassan and Bangalore will be reduced from 4.5 hours to 3.20 hours, according an estimate.
The then union surface transport minister KH Muniyappa had strived for the sanctioning of the project in 2005. But the project was stalled for eight months last year.
