ANF personnel killed in encounter with 'naxalites' in Belthangady

Mangalore, October 9: A police personnel was killed and many others injured in an encounter with suspected naxalites at a forest in Belthangady taluk in the wee hours of Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Mahadeva Mane, a Bijapur-based personnel of Anti Naxal Force (ANF) police.

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Labhu Ram and Inspector General of Police Alok Mohan (Western Range) confirmed the incident.

Mr Mohan said the incident occurred near a village called Manjalakadu, about 17 km from Belthangady.

There was a tip off about the movement of 'naxalites' and a “strong contingent” of the ANF had been positioned to ambush them, he said.

“Not many of them could be sighted because of darkness”, the IGP said. Details will be known when policemen undertake combing of the area after daybreak, he added.

The ANF contingent had begun combing operations around 8 pm on Saturday along with the support of local police.

Unofficial sources said that in the mid nigh the police contingent countered an armed group of 'Netravati' naxalites led by Vikram Gowda.

It is learnt that several people from both the groups were injured in a fierce exchange of gun fire.

Mangaluru, Jul 3: Four central crime branch (CCB) police personnel tested positive for coronavirus on Friday in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka.

So far, eighteen police personnel, including an official of the ACP rank and 12 from Ullal police station, have tested positive for Covid-19 in the district in the last few days, police sources said.

A policeman from Mangaluru Rural station and another from Puttur station have also been infected.

All the personnel who tested positive have been admitted to the designated Covid-19 hospitals.

City police commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash said adequate protection has been provided to police personnel who were fighting the pandemic and the members of their families.

As of Thursday, the total coronavirus cases in the district stood at 923 and the toll 18 while the state's infection count has crossed the 18,000 mark with 272 deaths.

Udupi, Jan 5: The district administration has identified 460 beneficiaries who will be allotted flats at Herga under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, informed MLA Raghupati Bhat.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday he said the Udupi Municipal Council will construct the apartments in the 8.22 acres of land earmarked for the purpose at Herga. The flats will be ready before April 2021.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: The Karnataka Government will impose stricter restrictions till March 31 to tackle the spread of COVID-19, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said on Monday.

''While all non-essential government establishments will also be closed from today, we are discussing on whether there should be a total shutdown similar to what was in place on Sunday during 'Janata Curfew'. We will take a call on this after discussing this with Opposition leaders by evening,'' he added.

Addressing press persons after a meeting with doctors and experts from private hospitals, the Chief Minister said free food will be served to the poor in Indira Canteens all through the day.
