First unit of UPCL shut down for annual maintenance

Udupi, October 9: The first unit of the coal-based thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd at Yellur in Udupi district has stopped generating power since October 7 as it has been shut down for annual maintenance.

Vice-president (Corporate Affairs) of UPCL K. Kishore Alva told The Hindu over the telephone on Saturday that the maintenance work would take at least a month, and the first unit would resume power generation in the first or second week of November. The capacity of the first unit was 600 MW.

The second unit with same capacity (600 MW) was ready. But the government had not installed 400 kV line to transmit power from it. Power from the first unit was being transmitted through 220 kV line. But a 220-kV line could transmit only 425 MW of power. “The government can lift power from the second unit if it wants to,” he said. Both the units of UPCL, which produced 600 MW each, were dependent on imported coal for power generation. The company was not facing any shortage of coal, Mr. Alva said.

Mangaluru's biggest mall Forum Fiza reopens

Mangaluru, Jun 8: Forum Fiza Mall in Mangaluru on Monday reopened for public after Ministry of Home Affairs allowed the reopening of shopping malls from June 8 with certain precautionary measures amid COVID-19 pandemic.

People visited the mall wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

Earlier, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had said that religious places and places of worship for public, hotels, restaurants and other hospitality services along with shopping malls will be permitted to open from June 8.

However, these facilities will not be able to resume operations inside containment zones designated by authorities in states, said a government notification.

Karnataka govt to hold first of it's kind virtual job fair on July 10

Bengaluru, Jul 5: In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and the fear of layoffs lurking everywhere, the state government is holding a first-of-its-kind virtual job fair on July 10, to help people find jobs commensurate with their skill sets.

Co-ordinated by the Karnataka Skill Development Corporation (KSDC), the job fair will see participation of more than 40 companies for about 6,000 job openings.

The government will connect companies with job seekers who have registered on the recently-launched Skill Connect portal or on the Kaushalya Karnataka’s portal for migrant workers from the state who have returned home.

A candidate can either directly apply to a company, or await the portal to match their skills with available jobs. There is also a self-evaluation section on the website which will suggest whether a candidate needs to further skill oneself or whether they are eligible for jobs with their current set of skills.

Firms such as Life Insurance Corporation, Barbeque Nation and Arvind Mills are among the participants.

Mangaluru | 3 held for Adyar GP member Yaqoob’s murder

Mangaluru, Jul 15: The Mangaluru city police arrested three people in connection with the murder of Adyar Gram Panchayat member Yaqoob, which took place on Friday last week. Personal enmity and financial issues are the reason behind the murder, said police.

The arrested accused are Shakir, Haneef and Shakir Ahmed, all residents of Adyar.

According to police, the main accused Shakir, who was involved with the sand mafia and had other business interests had financial issues, and personal enmity with Yaqoob, a GP member backed by the BJP.

The investigating officer said they were produced before the court through video conference. They have been remanded in police custody for undergoing testing for Covid-19. They will be again be produced before the court physically, only if they test negative.
