Mangalore, October 12: Former Mangalore Mayor K Ashraf, who had played the resignation card for the first time in January, protesting B Janardhan Poojary's “dictatorship”, has now taken a firm decision to bid adieu to the Congress party.

With this, the in-fighting in Dakshina Kannada District Congress committee has spilled out in the open once again, despite repeated patch-up bids.

In a bulk SMS sent to his friends in the media, the first president of the newly formed Mangalore City Block Congress unit, made it clear that he would not remain a Congressman anymore.

“I, K Ashraf, hereby declare my resignation from the basic membership of the Congress party. The decision will be officially announced on October 14 in Mangalore Press Club” stated the short SMS.

It can be mentioned here that Mr Ashraf had expressed frustration over the lack of support from the party leaders and their followers during his crisis times.

He also had blamed the hand of a “few envious Congress leaders of Poojary group” in fixing his “innocent son” in a drug cartel case.

The final blow seems to be the FIR purportedly filed against his son and few others for allegedly threatening a drug victim at Athena Hospital in city.

Mr Ashraf lamented that there are a people in Congress, who are BJP-minded. “They also made life miserable for Lance Lott pinto, the Opposition Leader in MCC”, he said.

“The concerned SI in this case is acting at the behest of certain people”, he said adding that this SI had been creating trouble for him even when he was in Bunder police station.

He said that the assurance given by Mangalore City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh that nothing would happen to him and his son, has proved wrong.

“The party leaders could not protect my interest. How can I protect the interest of the party workers if situation continues like this?” he asked.

The father in Mr Ashraf has made it clear that he wanted to fight his son's case with the support of likeminded people from any organisation.

Mr Ashraf, who had begun his Congress career over two decades ago as a staunch follower of 'Saala Mela' famed party veteran, gradually occupied several posts of responsibility within the party organisation.

He also said that his recent proximity with another Congress heavyweight and former Chief Minister M Veerappa Moily, had been a problem for Poojary and his “chelas”.

Being elected as a member of Mangalore City Corporation for three terms and having served as the mayor for a year, Ashraf was elevated to the responsible post of the president of newly formed Mangalore City Block Congress unit last year.

However, the same elevation ultimately led to his alienation within the party, as Mr Poojary had allegedly humiliated him in front of a huge crowd at a programme organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee to formally handover the new responsibility to him.

He had been keeping a low profile ever since he was made the office bearer and was not seen any of the party forum in the recent past apparently due to the treatment meted out to him by one group of the party

In the wake of increased enthusiasm in another former Congress leader MG Hegde after joining JD (S), former Mayor's resignation has raised curiosity among the people over his next move.

Meanwhile, Mr Ashraf's BJP counterparts in MCC have also confirmed that the present trouble to the former is fomented by his own party colleagues.

He said that he a got a call from former BJP Mayor Shankar Bhat, who apparently told him that they have not applied any pressure to book case against his son.

New Delhi, Jun 4: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response from Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, on a plea challenging his election in 2019 from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency as a joint candidate of the Janata Dal Secular and the Congress.

A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and Hrishiksh Roy issued notice to the returned candidate from the high-profile constituency on an appeal challenging the Karnataka High Court's order by which an election petition against his win was dismissed.

In the proceedings held through video-conferencing, the top court issued notice and tagged the appeal filed by G Devarajegowda for hearing with other similar pending plea filed by the BJP candidate on the issue.

Mr Devarajegowda in the plea said that his election petition was dismissed by the High Court on "procedural irregularities". The plea said that Mr Prajwal had resorted to unfair and corrupt practices and his election should be set aside.

It said the High Court did not consider the fact that by dismissing the election petition, it was running a risk of having a representative in parliament who has not got the maximum number of valid votes.

The petitioner, an advocate by profession, sought a declaration of rival BJP candidate, A Manju, as the winner for having secured the maximum number of valid votes.

A separate appeal was earlier filed by Mr Manju against the High Court order and the top court had already issued notice to the retuned candidate on that.

Mr Manju had challenged the 2019 election of Mr Prajwal on the ground that there was allegedly non-disclosure of assets held by him in his election affidavit.

Mr Prajwal was declared winner with 6,76,606 votes. Mr Manju came first runner-up with 5,35,282 votes.

Bengaluru, Feb 29: Dreaded underworld don Ravi Poojary's lawyer Dilraj has allegedly been kept out of hearing distance and as a mute spectator during interrogation by the police.

"The lawyer is a mute spectator out of hearing distance from the interrogation. He is not privy to what police ask Pujari," a source told media.

As directed by the court and requested by Poojary, Dilraj is allowed to be present near the interrogation for him to consult on legal issues, but the cops have made sure that he does not hear anything for fear of leaking information.

The court has also ordered the interrogation to be video graphed, which the police are carrying out.

Police sources said that Ravi Poojary is relaxed and cool during the multi-lingual interrogation.

"He is cool, giving frank replies. Poojary is exhibiting confidence in whatever he is telling. Maybe confidently lying, police are not new to him," said the source.

According to source, the gangster knows how to handle police, with sufficient knowledge to reveal how much he wants to, when to stop, when to talk, when to mislead and plant false information.

"Poojary is being interrogated in his mother tongue Kannada, Hindi and English. He is fluent in English," the source said.

However, the source denied speculation gaining currency that Poojary requested police not to send him to Mumbai fearing of being eliminated by the henchmen of dreaded underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan.

"Nothing of that sort happened. It doesn't work like that. He has been captured after 25 years, and he is not a king to choose. Wherever the law takes him, he will go there," said the source.

Rajan is serving a life sentence inside a high security cell in Delhi's Tihar jail.

Currently, the probe is focused on Tilknagar Shabnam Developers double murder shootout case. Police are discovering information, verifying it with respect to evidence and building the case.

Taking regular breaks, police are interrogating Poojary from morning till evening.

Of the over 200 cases against Poojary in the southern state, 39 are in Bengaluru, 36 at Mangaluru, 11 in Udupi on the state's west coast and one each at Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kolar and Shivamogga in Malnad.

The other cases are in Mumbai (49) and in Gujarat (75) pertaining to extortion, kidnapping, ransom demand and murder threats.

Poojary also extorted huge amounts from popular Bollywood stars and realtors. He was also involved in an attempt to murder case, aimed at killing a prominent lawyer of Mumbai.

A four-member Karnataka police team led by Pandey brought the 52-year-old underworld don to Bengaluru from Dakar in Senegal via Paris in an Air France scheduled flight during the wee hours and kept him at an interrogation centre in the city's south-east suburb.
