Former Mangalore Mayor among 11 arrested for illegal gold prospecting

Davanagere, October 15: Police have confirmed that former Mangalore Mayor Purandaradas Kuloor was among the 11 suspected illegal gold prospectors nabbed while panning for gold in a reserve forest area at Jagalur in Davanagere district.

A former policeman and sportsman, Koloor had served as the Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation during 2004-05.

Other 10 arrested have been identified as Badmanabh Bhat and Rajesh Shetty from Mangalore, Ponnappa, Jabir Mohammad and Abdul Rahman, Siddeeq from Kodagu district, Basavaraj and Mahantesh from Bellary and Rangappa from Jagalur.

Two cars worth Rs 5 lakh, and a motorbike have been seized from the arrested. Among the 15 suspected gold prospectors, four persons managed to escape during the raid, said HS Venkatesh, the Superintendent of Police in a press meet.

He said that the arrested were panning for the gold at the Rangayyana Durga Reserve Forest area at Jagalur taluk.

It is assumed that Rangappa and Mahantesh, who were suspected to be the masterminds, had brought the other people with the promise of hidden gold. Padmanabh Bhat from Mangalore had accompanied the miscreants for Ganapati Pooja during the crime.

Acting on a tip off, Harapanahalli DySP Anitha, Jagalur CPI J S Tippeswamy, PSI Imran Beg raided the spot and arrested the accused.

A case has been registered at Bilichodu Police Station in Jagalur.

Mangaluru, June 29: As many as 32 fresh covid positive cases were reported in Dakshina Kannada today. In Udupi 18 new positive cases were reported. 

In Dakshina Kannada out of the 32 positive cases, one had returned from another state. Ten persons had contracted the disease from patient number 9590, 10274, 10275, 9739, 9589, 12384 and 10582.

Nine persons are suffering from influenza-like illness (ILI), and Six others are suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Infection. The health officials are tracing the contacts of five others.

In Udupi, out of 18 positive cases, 5 had travelled from Maharashtra, four had travelled from Bangaluru and nine others had contracted the virus from the COVID Positive patients.

Bengaluru, Jun 20: A 56-year-old head constable, who had tested positive for the coronavirus infection a couple of days ago and was undergoing treatment, died on Saturday, police said.

The deceased, attached to the Kalasipalya police station, was being treated at Victoria Hospital here, they said.

This the second death of a policeman in the state due to COVID-19. The first one was an assistant sub-inspector attached to the V V Puram traffic police station.

Officials said the deceased constable was among nine others who had tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, an ASI with the Wilson Garden traffic police station here has also reportedly tested positive. According to sources, the ASI is undergoing treatment at a designated hospital and the station has been sanitised. His contacts are being quarantined.

Mangaluru, May 12: Two people hailing from Udupi district tested positive for covid-19 today. The sources of this infection is said to be Mangaluru's First Neuro Hospital.

Fresh bulletin from health and family welfare department revealed that a 52-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man from Karkala in Udupi were tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.

Among them, the woman had undergone treatment at the First Neuro Hospital. She is said to have contracted the infection from P-507 who was also was tested positive  April 27. And the youth was in touch with the woman.

The duo have not visited their home in Karkala for past few days. They were in quarantine and tested positive while being admitted at the same hospital.

With this the total number of COVID-19 cases found in Dakshina Kannada district are 33 now. Three among them have died and 14 have been discharged. Now, the district has 16 active coronavirus cases.
