Raitha Sangha activists go semi-nude protesting cancellation of public-hearing on UPCL

Udupi, October 17: Activists of Udupi unit of Raitha Sangha headed by its president Vijay Kumar Hegde and Vice President of Nandikur Jana Jagrithi Samithi Madhava Shetty, on Monday staged a half nude protest against the government apathy in holding the public hearing on the ill effects of UPCL power plant, in front of the DC Office here.

In the beginning hundreds of agitators come from Padubidri, Yellur, and other places affected by the coal based UPCL power plant, had staged a peaceful dharna infront of the DC office. They had also brought two bottles of water samples, which was polluted by the power plant, from their open wells in Padubidri region, to be gifted to the Deputy Commissioner. They were protesting against the Deputy Commissioner MT Reju, who inspite of his assurance had failed to hold the public hearing with the Expert Committee on the ill effects of the UPCL power plant, prior to Oct 17.

Agitators, inspite of repeated requests, were not allowed to meet the DC.

As the Deputy Commissioner refused to turn up to the dharna site agitators got irked and resorted to half nude protest by taking out their shirts. As the agitators announced even to strip their pants, police following the instructions from the DC invited the agitators to his chamber.

Inside the chamber Vijay Kumar Hegde took the DC to task for not holding the public hearing with the expert committee. He said that people in the region had been suffering from skin diseases, cattle have been suffered, and well water had been polluted all due to the environment pollution by the UPCL power plant. ``Inspite of this you have been a mute spectator and you are unfit to be the DC'', he said.

DC in his reply said that he had been he was keen to hold the public hearing, but as two new members of the expert committee were yet to be appraised of the older committee reports, by providing them zerox copies, the meeting got delayed. He assured to hold the meeting within two weeks.

Agitators demanded the DC to keep the UPCL unit – 1 shut till the expert committee holds public hearing submits its report.

Activist Vidya Dinakar demanded the Deputy Commissioner to make the UPCL pay for its violation causing environment pollution, under the Polluter Pays principle.

Bengaluru, May 18: Karnataka education minister S Suresh Kumar on Monday announced the SSLC examination dates. Earlier, Karnataka SSLC examinations were to be held between March 27 and April 9, 2020, but had to be postponed due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.

The minister announced that Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) will conduct SSLC examination between June 25 to July 4 and the PUC exam for English paper will be held on June, 18, 2020.

"Examinations for Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) will be conducted between June 25 and July 4 in Karnataka. Exams for English paper of Pre-University Course (PUC) will he held on June 18: Karnataka Education Minister S Suresh Kumar," ANI tweeted.

The minister for primary and secondary education had held a meeting with the department officials to discuss the feasibility of conducting the exam.

Modalities of conducting the examination in the current situation of the COVID 19 pandemic while taking care of interests of students is of paramount importance, S Suresh Kumar said adding these issues have been kept in mind while finalising the schedule.

With inter-state and inter-district mobility a major issue with public transport not available and also due to 14-day institutional quarantine norms, the minister had told TOI that an idea has been introduced to allow students appear for the examination in the district where they presently are than at their designated examination centre.

Bengaluru, Jan 17: Six persons, said to be supporters of Social Democratic Party of India, have been arrested in connection alleged attempt to murder a member of RSS in Bengaluru.

Varun Bhopala (34), a resident of Sarakki in JP Nagar, was attacked while he was on his way to his father's shop near JC Road after attending a pro-CAA event organised by the RSS and other Hindutva organisations on December 22, 2019.

Police commissioner Bhaskar Rao said the arrested are Irfan alias Mohammed Irfan (33), Syed Akbar alias Mechanic Akbar (46), Syed Siddiq Akbar (30), Akbar Basha (27), Sanaulla Sharif (28) and Sadiq UL Ameen (39) - all residents of KG Halli in East and North Bengaluru.

Rao said the arrested wanted to attack and kill the leaders who took part in the pro-CAA event. They initially pelted seven stones to scatter the crowd so that they can attack the leaders, but they failed. Later, they saw Varun walking out of the crowd wearing a saffron shirt. So the arrested followed him and attacked him with lethal weapons. Assuming he is dead, the gang fled on their bikes towards Bidadi.

''The SDPI activists were funded by their leaders to create a disturbance, kill Hindu organisation leaders,'' Rao said. "I have formed a special team to investigate in-depth about the SDPI activities and take necessary action,'' he added.
