Mangalore, October 18: Economic growth and development still remain something of a mystery as there is no universally applicable model or theory of development, said Dr. GV Joshi, Professor of Economics, JKSHIM, Nitte.

He was presenting a paper on 'Economic Development: Enduring or Inclining?' in the first session of 'Samprathi-2011' a two-day national seminar on 'sustainable development: towards a self-reliant India' organised by St Aloysius College (Autonomous), here on Tuesday.

“We have to learn from all theories without accepting anyone of them in Toto. There is no consensus on what works for growth and development. There is no clear way to ease poverty. Growth or development is purely a subjective phenomenon. In face there is a need for rethinking development economics”, he said.

“The thought on development has passed through five stages. Now the accent has shifted from the mere dynamics of growth to include the institutions to deliver the benefits of growth to the poor and the disadvantaged. Precisely, this is the institutions to deliver the benefits of growth to the poor and the disadvantaged. Precisely, this is the stage in which the concept of inclusive growth has gained a lot of currency”, he said.

Dr Joshi said that there are empirical studies establishing the relation between economic growth and reduction in poverty. One empirical study (2009) indicates that Cambodia, India, Mongolia and the Philippines from a category of countries in which economic growth failed to help many who are poor. There is a realization that growth will generally be not pro-poor if left completely to markets, he said.

“Economic growth or development has to become enduring and sustainable by ameliorating the condition of the poor and the marginalized sections of the society. Growth should be fair and just, employment-oriented and environment friendly, not ruthless, rootless, voiceless and futureless. Specific policy measures are needed to make economic development enduring and sustainable because as things stand today, it is inclining and exclusive”, he added.

The programme was be inaugurated by Ramakrishna Y B, Executive Chairman, Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board, Bangalore.

Fr Joseph Ignatius Rodrigues SJ, Rector, St. Aloysius Institution, Mangalore presided over the function.

Dr. H. Sudarshan, Director, Karuna Trust & VGKK, Bangalore, delivered keynote address.

Udupi, May 16: Close on the heels of six Covid-19 cases being detected in a little over 24 hours, Udupi recorded its first death of a Covid-19 patient. The victim is a 54-year-old man from Mumbai, who died due to a heart attack on Thursday. His reports came back on Saturday, and confirmed that he had Covid-19. The Udupi district administration has arranged to carry out his last rites as per government designated guidelines for Covid-19 victims.

A medical bulletin issued by the superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, stated that the patient was admitted due to a heart-related issue on May 13.

Some members on the team that treated the patient have been quarantined. The hospital’s emergency department will operate as usual, and the outpatient department will operate as usual from 8.30am to 1pm, following government guidelines, the bulletin said. Deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha said that since the patient was from Mumbai, the authorities collected his swab sample for testing, as a precautionary measure.

The man suffered from chest pain, and was initially taken to the taluk hospital at Kundapur from where he was shifted to Kasturba Hospital, due to the seriousness of his condition. The doctors operated on him on May 13, and he suffered a severe heart attack on May 14 and died, the DC said. “Three hospital staff without PPE kits, who attended to the patient, have been quarantined,” the DC said, adding that the operating doctors and nurses had worn PPE kits.

In addition, 5 others who travelled with the person from Mumbai and 57 people with him at the Kundapur isolation centre, have been designated as primary contacts, and 38 others as secondary contacts, and quarantined. The staff at Kundapur taluk hospital too had taken precautions in handling the patient, the DC said. Udupi presently has six active cases, including a 1-year-old child and 5 others, all of whom returned from Dubai on May 12.

Mangaluru, May 23: In order to ensure that students do not miss out on their studies due to educational institutions being shut owing to the coronavirus lockdown, Dakshina Kannada Pre-university College Principles Association (DKPUCPA) is conducting online classes on YouTube for pre-university students.

The online lessons are shot by lecturers at St Aloysius College and the lectures are then uploaded on YouTube enabling students to watch them online.

"The whole world is currently in a crucial situation because of COVID-19, and because of the lockdown, all are forced to stay indoors. Usually, we used to conduct lectures in a class full of students, but now it is a new experience that we are providing the same information to students in their absence," Rajaram Rao, a lecturer said while speaking to news agency.

He said at present these classes are being conducted for second year pre-university students.

If any student has a doubt on any concept, he said they can contact the teachers. "At present, students also are getting information about the teachers who have uploaded the videos. All the information about the teachers is already being uploaded on the system so that they can contact the teacher," he said.

Dhanya, a student, hailed the DKPUCPA for the setting up of the online classes despite the prevailing situation.

"The teachers who have taught in these classes have taught very well, as if they are teaching right in front of us. It has been very useful for me during this time," she said.

The nationwide lockdown imposed to combat the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic has been extended to May 31.
