Minister exhorts private hospitals to focus on rural areas

Mangalore, October 19: Prestigious private hospitals should extend their services towards rural areas and contribute to the rural health care, said District in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar.

Addressing at the decennial celebration of A J Hospital and Research Centre on Tuesday, Mr Palemar said that private hospitals could play an important role in this aspect as they are in a better position to render services to society in terms of manpower and technologies.

“The private medical centres should focus on the rural areas to serve the people and the wealth should be utilised for the society”, he added.

He also commended the effort of entrepreneur A J Shetty, the chairman of AJ group of institutions, in developing the hospital to one of the most modern hospitals in this region.

Inaugurating the function Keshavananda Bharathi Swamiji, the seer of Edaneer Mutt, said that the AJ Hospital's growth in the past 10 years is astonishing and AJ Shetty's achievement will always be remembered.

Mr Shetty, who presided over the programme, distributed the prizes for the institution staff, who exhibited outstanding performance in different fields.

Dr Amitha Marla, Director Medical Administration welcomed the gathering, while Dr Prashanth Marla, Medical Director, AJ Hospital, delivered the introductory address.

Vice Chancellor, NITTE University Dr Shantharam Shetty, Dr Ramesh Pai, Dean, AJ Institute of Medical Science, Dr Sureshchandra Shetty, Principal, AJ Institute of Dental Sciences, were present.

On the occasion, AJ Shetty couple was given a warm felicitation by the staff of the institution.

Mangaluru, Jan 9: Customs officials seized 1.575 kg gold, worth about, Rs 63 lakh from three passengers who arrived from Dubai here at Mangalore International Airport on Thursday.

Official sources said that in the first incident, three days back gold weighing 336.7 grams was found in possession of an inbound air passenger. The passenger who arrived by Air India flight from Dubai had concealed the gold in his socks. The value of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 13.43 lakh.

In the other two instances that took place on January 7, gold weighing 1239 gram and worth about Rs 50.3 lakh was confiscated from two passengers who arrived from Dubai by Air India flight. One of the passengers had attempted to smuggle 523 gram gold in paste form.

Hubli, Feb 25: A Hubli court in Karnataka has sent to police custody till February 28 three students from Jammu and Kashmir, who were booked under sedition charges for raising pro-Pakistan slogan in a video shared on social media.

A second Joint Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court on Monday sent the three students, identified as Basit Ashik Sophi (19), Talib Majid (19) and Amir Mohiuddin (23), to police custody till February 28 for questioning in the matter.

The court directed the police to make the accused undergo a medical evaluation before the interrogation and produce the medical certificates in the court before the next hearing.

The three students were last week transferred to Belgaum Hindalga jail from Hubli sub-jail and the case, registered in Gokul Road police station, was also transferred to the rural police station because the video was recorded in the college hostel room which is in the latter's jurisdiction.

The Kashmiri students were under judicial custody since February 17 following their arrest for raising pro-Pakistan slogans and posting a video of the same on social media on the night of February 16.

Mangaluru, Jan 7: The city police arrested a youth on charge of spreading messages against political leaders through WhatsApp and allegedly issuing life threats warnings against them.

The accused has been identified as Anwar, a resident of Peruvai village in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada. He was working in Qatar.

On Monday, Yathish from Vittal filed a complaint and based on that police arrested Anwar.
