BJP govt solely responsible for power crisis: Cong

Mangalore, October 20: Solely blaming the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government for the growing power crisis in Karnataka, members of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of the Office of Deputy Commissioner here.

Addressing the protesters Mulky-Moodbidri MLA K Abhayachandra Jain said, the BJP government, which came to power in the state, promising 24 hour power, not only failed to keep up its promise, but also became responsible for worst power crisis.

Dubbing the BJP's allegation against Centre of non-cooperation in resolving the power crisis, as an “escape policy and a bid to fool people”, Mr Jain said that the unreasonable confrontationist attitude of the ruling party of the state is the prime reason for Karnataka to face blackout for round the year.

“The state government instead of producing power, chose to purchase power from nearby states spending around Rs 6,500 crore since 2006”, he lamented.

Lambasting the government for inefficient energy policy in state, he also criticised the continuous hike in power tariff.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Ivan D'Souza satirised the BJP government, stating that the ruling party of the state seems to be very sick as many of its leaders, who are facing graft charges, are in need of emergency treatment.

Mr D'Souza also ridiculed ex-chief minister BS Yeddyurappa's sudden sickness and hospitalisation after he was remanded to judicial custody.

District Youth Congress President Mithun Rai, local leader of the party Ibrahim Kodijal, DCC spokesperson TK Sudhir, Ullal Town Municipal Council member Farooq were present among others.

Swiggy to lay off 1,100 employees as corona hits online food orders

Bengaluru, May 18: Indian food delivery startup Swiggy said on Monday it would lay off 1,100 employees, or nearly 14% of its workforce, to cut costs, as a weeks-long nationwide lockdown to curb the coronavirus outbreak hits demand for online food ordering.

The company, backed by South African internet giant Naspers, also said it will scale down adjacent businesses and has already shut several of its cloud kitchens - facilities that only cater to takeaway orders - temporarily or permanently.

“The core food delivery business has been severely impacted and will stay impacted over the short term, but is expected to start growing again after that,” said Sriharsha Majety, co-founder and chief executive at Bengaluru-based Swiggy.

Swiggy, one of India’s best known startups, is among many that are laying off employees and reshaping their business in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced 1.3 billion Indians indoors and crippled business.

India is currently under a two-month lockdown, and though several curbs are being eased, public places such as restaurants remain closed, hurting restaurants themselves as well as companies such as Swiggy and main rival Zomato.

Bengaluru, Jan 22: JD(S) president HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday termed the surrender of the accused in the alleged planting of an explosive at Mangalore Airport as another act of a drama and said that the incident should serve as an Eye-opener for the Prime minister Narendra Modi over the prevailing unemployment problem in the country.

Addressing a press conference, the Janta Dal (Secular) leader said that the surrendered man, who had allegedly planted explosive at the airport, was an employed youth and PM needs to address the prevailing unemployment problem in the country.

The former chief minister said that the accused have higher education qualifications and belonged to the Hindu community, disapproving that only people belonging to the Muslim community resort to violence.

7 held for violating prohibitory orders during lockdown in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 24: Seven people were arrested on Tuesday for violating prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 of CrPC in Mangaluru during the lockdown in Karnataka, Commissioner of Police PS Harsha said.
Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday had announced a complete lockdown in the state till April 1.
"In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the entire state will be locked down from 12 am of March 23 to April 1. People are requested to strictly follow it to contain the coronavirus spread," he said.
Earlier, the state government had ordered the suspending of all public and private transport services.
According to the data compiled by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of the infection-related death toll in the country rose to nine on Tuesday, while the total number of active cases reached 482.
